High water levels on the Mississippi River caused backwater flooding of tributaries such as the Big Muddy River. At the Murphysboro gage, the Big Muddy River was above the 16-foot flood stage all month. The first crest of 22.2 feet occurred on the 10th, followed by a second crest of 17.8 feet on the 24th. These levels result in minor flooding of bottomlands and low-lying areas.
