Hail and Damaging Winds in Texas, May 14 to 15, 1998
Scattered severe storms affected the eastern South Plains (mainly east of the caprock) late on the 14th and early on the 15th. There were a few hail reports, but much of the impact was due to high winds.

Scattered severe storms affected the eastern South Plains (mainly east of the caprock) late on the 14th and early on the 15th. There were a few hail reports, but much of the impact was due to high winds. Gusts between 50 and 60 knots (up to 69 mph) were recorded at Lubbock International Airport, Childress airport (twice; 3+ hours apart), and by a NWS cooperative observer in Lynn County. Childress was hardest hit, with signs, billboards, and a brick wall blown down (in addition to extensive tree damage). Elsewhere, reports of damages were confined mainly to trees (both uprooted and broken large limbs). In addition, a couple storage sheds were destroyed in Quitaque. In Cedar Hill (Floyd County), an 18 wheeler was blown over, and high winds heavily damaged a tree, shed, and barn.
