A low pressure system in the upper atmosphere over the Texas South Plains and a very cold and moist air mass over the Texas Panhandle combined to produce blizzard conditions with sustained wind speeds of 30 to 40 mph and gusts near 50 mph along with visibilities near zero. Snowfall amounts generally ranged from up to an inch across the central Texas Panhandle and one to four inches across the extreme southern Texas Panhandle. Major highways in and around Amarillo were closed Saturday night through Sunday morning along with most roads. Power outages due to the strong winds were common across all of the Texas Panhandle.
