A strong capping inversion kept most of West Texas from seeing any deep convection on this afternoon, but a combination of very hot temperatures and strong convergence along the dry line started storms in Southwest Texas. The high temperature at KMAF was 106 on this afternoon on the dry side of the dry line, with KFST reporting 101 degrees and a dew point of 64 degrees on the moist side plus an easterly 25 knot wind. To get an idea of the mid-level warmth that had to be overcome, the 00 UTC 700 mb temperature at KMAF was 16.2 degrees C.

The initial storm of this event developed along the dry line, near the Ector/Crane County line. The storm developed rapidly and was a single cell storm for much of its life. The storm intensified as it moved into the western part of Midland where golfball size hail fell briefly damaging vehicles and a few roofs.
Another storm that developed along the dry line and moved in from Martin County.
Thunderstorm outflow winds damaged three new pickup truck beds and destroyed a bed topper. Also a goat shed had much of its metal stripped off.
Power lines and a tree were knocked down by the same storm as it moved to the east.
