Tornadoes and Hail in Georgia, May 3, 1998

Dime size hail was reported on Tabby Lynch Road.

Numerous public reports indicated large hail fell across Floyd county. Quarter size up to golf ball size hail was reported 10 miles northwest of Rome. Dime to nickel size was indicated in Rome, Armuchee, and the eastern parts of the county. It hailed continuously for 20 minutes to the east of Rome.

Several reports of hail from quarter to half dollar size were received. Hail covered the ground in some areas.

Reports from eastern Bartow county indicated up to golf ball size hail.

Numerous public and spotter reports indicated dime to golf ball size hail fell across the south half of Cherokee county. Cars and roof tops were damaged a mile south of Holly Springs, where 2 inch hail was reported. Nickel size hail covered the ground 2 inches deep southwest of Canton.

Four homes in Cherokee county sustained minor damage when struck by lightning.

The Cherokee county EMA reported thunderstorm winds knocked down trees and power lines.

Dime to nickel size hail was reported.

Public and spotter reports indicated golf ball size hail in Crabapple and 1.5 miles west of exit 11 off Georgia highway 400.

Numerous public reports indicated dime to golf ball size hail fell across northern Fulton county in the Alpharetta area.

Nickel to quarter size hail fell in southern Forsyth county. Small trees were downed near the Fulton county line.

Several public reports indicated hail ranging from dime to golf ball size fell in Suwanee, Sugar Hill, and Buford.

Several public reports indicated dime to nickel size hail.

A funnel cloud was reported over East Poplar Road.

The public reported dime size hail.

Severe thunderstorm winds knocked down 3 chicken houses and damaged the roof and shingles of 3 homes. A well house was blown away and large tree tops were twisted off. A funnel cloud was spotted over the area about 30 feet off the ground.

Large hail from a severe thunderstorm was reported in several areas of Fayette county. The largest hail was across the southern part of the county. An off-duty NWS meteorologist reported 2 inch hail covering the ground near Peachtree city. Numerous other reports from Peachtree City indicated silver dollar size, tennis ball size and as large as 3 inch hail. There were many cars and house roofs damaged. The hail broke a window at the number 5 fire station and caused a roof to collapse on Greenville Road. Quarter size to golf ball size hail was reported in Fayetteville and other parts of Fayette county.

A spotter reported dime to quarter size hail near the Carroll/Heard county line.

A spotter reported 8 inch diameter trees were snapped off about 10 feet up.

Thunderstorm winds knocked trees down.

Public and spotter reports indicated dime size hail.

A funnel cloud and small hail were reported in Franklin.

The Houston county EMA and 3 of his spotters reported spotting a funnel cloud from near Pabst to Hayneville. The funnel remained aloft and no damage was reported.

Dime to quarter size hail was reported in south Bibb county near Jones Road.

The Spalding county EMA Director reported quarter size hail.

The Monroe county fire chief reported numerous trees were knocked down by thunderstorm winds.

A severe thunderstorm cell spawned a tornado in the southeast corner of the county. The damage path was surveyed by a NWS employee who reported damage at the Whispering Pines mobile home park. Four mobile homes and a van were destroyed, mainly from trees falling on them.Two minor injuries occurred. Numerous trees and power lines were downed. Most of the damage appeared to be straight-line winds, but there was eveidence of circulation in some of the tree damage sites near the mobile home park. A metal outbuilding was lifted from a concrete pad and dropped 100 feet away, but items beneath the storage building remained intact on the pad. Eyewitness reports described the funnels as they ascended and descended. One person reported his truck was turned around in almost a complete circle but was left upright.

Police and rescue units reported trees knocked down across the county. There were reports of funnel clouds and 3 tornado touchdowns, but no confirmation.

Police also reported a brief tornado touchdown from another storm in northern Monroe county. Trees were damaged along highway 42 near Blount. No injuries or significant damage were reported. The path length and width were estimated.

The public reported golf ball size hail near Kennesaw and dime to quarter size around Acworth and Marietta. A funnel cloud was reportedly spotted in the Kennesaw area.

Golf ball size hail was reported in the southern part of the county.

The ground was half covered with dime to nickel size hail.

The public reported a funnel cloud moving east.

Crisp county 911 received a public report of a funnel cloud south of Arabi.

Hall county 911 received separate public reports of funnel clouds near Oakwood and near the intersection of State Road 60 and Nancy Creek Road.

Public reports indicated quarter size hail fell in downtown Carrollton. Dime size hail covered the ground and shredded leaves off trees near Lake Carroll.

Banks county 911 received a report of quarter size hail accumulating to 2 inches on a deck.

Several public reports indicated dime to golf ball size hail from west of Lawrenceville through the Snellville area to near the Walton county line. There was a report of tornado sounds near Snellville.

Thunderstorm winds knocked trees down that blocked highways 81 and 316 in Gwinnett county.

The public reported dime to quater size hail.

Nickel size hail was reported near the De Kalb/Rockdale county line near Covington highway.

The public reported dime to quarter size hail at several locations in northern Oconee county.

The public reported quarter size hail and tree tops snapped off.
