Thunderstorm Wind, Hillsborough

Thunderstorm downburst winds estimated at 50 to 55 mph caused major roof damage on the south side of a warehouse located on Riverview Drive west of Oak Street. The design and lightweight material used for the roof and overhang were significant contributors to the amount of damage incurred from the downburst wind.A worker observed straight winds, blowing from south to north at the leading edge of a gust front, impact the approximately 75 foot wide south side and fifteen foot high roof overhang of the damaged warehouse. The wind lifted the lightweight aluminum overhang upward and peeled it back along with an additional 20 feet of light-weight roofing material.
