Flood in Alaska, August 1 to 17, 1997

Contination of entry begun July 24. Rain covering much of the Valley occurred around the 5th-7th, and around the 13th, with amounts of 1 to 3 inches, resulting in toatal rainfall from 7/13 to 8/15 of 5.5 to 8.7 inches over the upper Valley, and 3.0 to 6.0 inches over the central Valley east and north of Fairbanks-Eielson AFB. On Aug 8, the Tanana River went over bankfull near Salcha and in the Rosie Creek area of Fairbanks...remainded steady through the 13th, then rose some more after the 13th, resulting in 5 families being evacuated. On the 14th, the Tanana crested at Rosie Creek...and farther downstream at Nenana high river levels caused groundwater seepage. By August 16, river levels at all locations but Manley had dropped enough to end the occurrance or threat of flooding...and at Manley the threat of flooding ended Aug 17th. Continued bank erosion near Salcha later in the month forced the evacuation of another home in the area. Total damage amounts are included in the July event..
