The year 1996 was one of the wettest ones on record for Delaware. Precipitation amounts by county average ranged from 57.5 inches in Sussex County to 61.1 inches in Kent County. This was about 14 to 18 inches above normal. The yearly total of 51.9 inches of rain at the New Castle County Airport was not a record. The record of 61.05 inches set in 1945 remained.
