For the third morning in a row, a severe thunderstorm complex moved into northeast Minnesota. These storms produced outflow boundaries which continued east into northwest Wisconsin where they met very moist, unstable air. The result was a series of afternoon thunderstorms that produced mainly large hail, although winds were strong enough to topple ten-inch diameter trees. The hail caused some vehicle damage.

Strong thunderstorm winds struck the Chippewa Valley Rock Fest, an outdoor rock festival located about 10 miles northeast of Chippewa Falls. Flying debris injured 10 people. The strong winds knocked over a beer tent and several large speaker towers.

A tornado touched down 1.5 miles southwest of Phelps (Vilas County) at 1640CST, and then moved east, uprooting trees and power poles. Trees fell on cars, homes and businesses in this rural area. It lifted two miles southeast of Phelps at 1647CST. Strong thunderstorm winds temporarily lifted the roof off a hangar building at the Cumberland Airport.
