Thunderstorms during the late morning and afternoon hours on the 1st resulted in hail up to quarter size, damaging lightning, damaging winds and flash flooding. Thunderstorm winds knocked down trees one mile south of Pearisburg, 5.5 miles west of Check, 3.5 miles southeast of Martinsville, six miles east of Buckingham, in Callaway, Volens, Check and Callands. Thunderstorm winds broke off 12-inch diameter tree limbs in Chatham. Lightning damaged a home and injured three people in Elk Creek. Lightning started a fire which damaged a carport and a house five miles south of Boones Mill. Lightning started a fire which destroyed a barn in Christiansburg. Up to 4.5 inches or rain from 1145 EST to 1345 EST in Rocky Mount resulted in creeks out of their banks, roads being flooded and a motorist being stranded in her vehicle.
