The Lamb County Sheriff's Office reported golf ball-size hail near Sudan. The public reported dime-size hail in Plains. Spotters reported dime-size hail west of Brownfield. In Sterling County, the sheriff's office reported dime to golf ball-size hail in and near Sterling City. A severe thunderstorm that produced marginally severe hail in southeast New Mexico became supercellular as it encountered deeper moisture in West Texas. Movement switched from northeast to southeast around 2000 CST. Quarter-size hail was first reported by a SKYWARN spotter east of Lamesa. Two-inch hail was reported near the Dawson-Martin County line near Patricia. Storm chasers passing through this area reported that up to two-inch hail was found in a three mile swath on the ground in the vicinity of Patricia. In Three Leagues, significant house damage occurred, and at least one vehicle had its windshield broken by hail. This supercell storm then moved southeast at 25 miles an hour into Howard County. Severe hail reports continued for the next two hours. Almost all the Big Spring reports came from SKYWARN spotters, with the sheriff's office reporting up to baseball-size hail in Coahoma. Later reports included baseball-size hail also in Big Spring. The widespread, large hail from this storm caused property damage over most of Big Spring, totalling $20 million. Doppler radar indicated a very strong mesocyclone associated with this storm while it was over Howard County. Also a prolific rain-producer, this storm produced extensive street flooding in Big Spring and along parts ofInterstate 20 near Big Spring.
