Sheriff Department report of three-quarters hail in the City of Merced. Rainfall mostly within a one-hour period of time was 1.81 inches after 1325 PDT. Continued damage to valley agriculture likely but not specifically assessed to this storm (see Dos Palos Y below).
Oak tree limbs were broken and other full-foilaged trees were toppled by brief strong wind in the Hanford/Lemoore area, 30 miles south-southeast of Fresno. In Hanford, one of the toppled trees damaged a car. A post-event survey was unable to ascertain whether severe thunderstorm wind criteria were met because soils were moist and trees were full-foilaged. However, the damage location just south of the Fresno County line and timing of the damage places this damage in proximity to severe storm damage in south-central Fresno County at Raisin City/Caruthers/and Easton.
Straightline high winds from a thunderstorm damaged several structure roofs at Easton Lumber, Easton, eight miles south of Fresno. Crop damage by three-quarters hail in Raisin City, 12 miles southwest of Fresno, and wind damage to trees in Caruthers, 16 miles south of Fresno, were likely the result of the thunderstorms and/or line of thunderstorms moving through the area. Additional crop damage was reported by hail and high wind in the Reedley area, 22 miles southeast of Fresno at 1515 PDT from this same line of thunderstorms. Note the continued damage to agriculture in Fresno County due to the inclement weather this spring.
Spotter reports of three-quarters hail in north-central Fresno associated with the passage of a line of thunderstorms from southwest through northeast through the central San Joaquin Valley. No reports of damage were received.
Based on doppler Radar indications a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for the Dos Palos Y, 17 miles south-southwest of Merced. Subsequent reports of three-quarters hail along with wind damage to power lines and trees were received. Affected crops included 55 percent loss on 6,300 acres of cotton, with damage to cantaloupe, corn, barley, and tomatoes.
