Tornadoes and Hail in Pennsylvania, August 13, 1994

Scattered trees were reported uprooted throughout the county. In addition 5,800 homes lost power. Lightning killed two women and injured one man in separate incidents. A 42-year-old man was injured when lightning struck a tent he was hiding in Ricketts Glen State Park. Lightning entered through his right shoulder and exited through his right foot. Farther southeast in Moon Lake Park in Plymouth Township two women were struck and killed by lightning while taking shelter under a pavilion. Lightning also split two of the pavilion's six support posts. One woman was so badly struck that she received third degree burns over 35% of her body, had two quarters fused in her pocket and the zipper to her jeans was melted. (F48O)(F50O)

Dime-size hail fell on the north side of Scranton.

Estimated wind gusts to 65 mph were observed in Telford.

Downed trees were reported in Telford. Penny-size hail fell in Chalfont. In Doylestown, six residents were evacuated from the Lenape Valley Foundation Sandy Ridge Center after lightning ignited a fire in the building. A separate lightning strike blew up the chimney and siding off a house in Doylestown.

Severe thunderstorms affected most of northern Lancaster County. Downed trees and power lines were reported in Columbia, Ephrata (Gusts to 60 mph reported), Manheim, New Holland, Salunga and West Hempfield. A downed tree in West Hempfield punched holes in the roof of a house. About 1,500 homes lost power. In addition to downed trees, golf ball-size hail fell in Rohrerstown.

Severe thunderstorms affected most of northern Lancaster County. Downed trees and power lines were reported in Columbia, Ephrata (Gusts to 60 mph reported), Manheim, New Holland, Salunga and West Hempfield. A downed tree in West Hempfield punched holes in the roof of a house. About 1,500 homes lost power. In addition to downed trees, golf ball-size hail fell in Rohrerstown.

Severe thunderstorms affected most of Montgomery County and downed what was described as a "countless" number of trees and wires. In western Conshohocken two house frames under construction collapsed. In New Hanover wind gusts to 73 mph were observed along with downed trees. In Souderton a measured wind gust to 58 mph was observed along with marble-size hail. In Upper Merion, a large tent was knocked down at the Valley Forge Convention Center. Thousands were without power. About 25,000 customers throughout the Philadelphia Electric Company (PECO) service area lost power this afternoon, 8,500 still did not have power as of 830 pm EST.

A weak tornado (F0 on the Fujita Scale) touched down on Barneston Road in Wallace Township. There was no property damage, but numerous trees were uprooted or snapped (up to three feet wide) on Barneston (at least 20), Templin and Indiantown Roads. The tornado was sighted by many individuals in the area. No injuries were reported.

A severe thunderstorm uprooted trees in West and East Whiteland Townships. As the thunderstorm moved northeast into Charlestown Township, it dropped a F1 (Fujita Scale) tornado on Valley Hill Road. Most of the damage with the second tornado of this day in Chester County was uprooted trees. But, a couple of trees knocked down awnings and a church sign and resulted in minor property damage. Although the tornado lifted in western parts of Charlestown, its parent thunderstorm produced downburst winds which knocked over trees on Pennsylvania State Route 29 in the eastern part of town. No injuries were reported.
