Winds of 50 to 75 miles an hour lasted nearly an hour and broke a plate glass window and knocked down some power lines.

The most damaging winds were across the southern part of the county and estimated at 90 miles an hour. The damage path went from Raymond through Alden to Sterling. Numerous tree damage was noted and utility poles were blown over. In Sterling, trees were uprooted and a large shed collapsed.

Winds of 85 to 95 an hour accompanied a line of thunderstorms that moved across the county. In the Russell area, four tractor-semitrailers were overturned on Interstate 70. A 50- by 100-foot boat and RV storage shed was destroyed near Dorrance with some of its debris scattered hundreds of yards. Damage to the shed was calculated at $30 thousand. Total county damage was about $40 thousand.

Strong winds blew a roof off of a house.

High winds tore the metal roof from a large horse barn south of town. Chunks of the flying metal hit a horse in the adjacent corral severing its foot just above the hoof. The horse had to be destroyed. The wind also knocked down power lines and trees.

High winds moved across the county from north to south producing widespread damage to trees, power lines and some buildings. Power was out in some areas for several days.

Winds clocked to 99 mph at the Jeffrey Power Plant near Emmett, and estimated to between 65 and 100 mph elsewhere caused widespread and severe damage across the entire county. Numerous trees, roofs, windows and power lines were damaged or destroyed from the high wind. Power was out in many areas for more than 48 hours. At the Jeffrey Power Plant, 33 empty rail cars were blown from off the track with coal loading machinery and buildings damaged. The plant had to briefly shut down. Damage to the plant was estimated at $2 to $2.5 million. Heavy rain accompanied the storm and flooded some areas. Cleanup continued for days. Total dollar loss for the county, including the Jeffrey Plant, was $4 to $5 million.

High winds damaged the historic Louis Vieux Elm tree east of Lousiville, knocking off several limbs. The tree is estimated to be about 130 years old.

Strong thunderstorm winds blew across the county. The strongest winds and most damage was across the northern half of the county. In Susank, buildings were damaged and large tree limbs were knocked down. A barn was completely destroyed while other sheds received damage on a farm near Hoisington. Two miles east of Elinwood, the roof was blown off an aluminum shed and 300 gallon tank was blown over.

High winds knocked over a large silo on a farrow house killing at least 15 hogs and trapping many others for several days. Other damage to trees, buildings and power lines was reported in the area.

This tornado broke contact with the ground several times but managed to knock down numerous telephone poles between Portis and Delphos as well as inflicting significant damage to several farm outbuildings just north of Delphos.

High winds estimated well over 65 mph caused widespread damage to Junction City and most of the county. Numerous downed trees, tree limbs and power lines occurred. At one time, an estimated 15,000 people were without power in Geary and Riley Counties. Significant damage was also reported at Ft. Riley Military base and Milford Lake where four injuries occurred.

High winds knocked down trees in Horton and much of southern and western Brown County.

High winds that turned over and damaged/destroyed campers and tents injured four people. None were serious, but three were taken to local hospitals for minor treatment. Heavy rains accompanied the high winds.

Damaging winds of 75 miles an hour hit the Salina area and ripped tree limbs and power lines down and yanked roofs off buildings.

Winds estimated to at least 70 mph caused widespread damage across the county. A couple near Paxico was briefly trapped in their mobile home when it was detached from its cables and flipped over. The uninsured mobile home was destroyed. The couple was treated for minor injuries at a hospital. Other damage to trees, power lines and roofs was common. Many crops were severely damaged in the storm.

Extremely strong thunderstorm winds caused extensive tree damage, blew the roof off of an implement company and dropped it on several large tractors and combines, and blew an above ground pool full of water off of it's foundation.

Winds hit 62 mph at the National Weather Service Office at Billard Airport, but were clocked at 83 mph at WIBW TV, near 6th and Wannamaker Road. The high winds caused widespread and severe damage to many trees, power lines and some buildings in the city of Topeka and surrounding area. An estimated 35,000 people were without electricity for 6 to 12 hours with some areas not restored for three to four days. Some roads were blocked by fallen trees and limbs. Utility repair crews were brought in from neighboring states to help repair the widespread damage. The wind, heavy rain and hail also severely damaged area crops.

This tornado remained on the ground very briefly as it passed over open country across the extreme northwestern portion of the county.

Winds estimated around 75 mph knocked down trees, power lines and damaged some buildings in the Circleville, Soldier and Whiting area.

Damage from thunderstorm winds included eight power poles down, numerous limbs down and a golf cart shed was upended and carried out into a field.

Sixty to eighty mile an hour winds passed across mainly the northern half of Reno County. There was widespread damage to trees. In Hutchinson, windows were shattered, two dozen utility poles were snapped, street signals were blown over and the showroom of a car dealership was blown off. In Buhler, a machine shed was destroyed. In Haven, a tractor-semitrailer was overturned, a grain bin was flattened and a bus barn near Yoder lost its roof.

Winds estimated to 80 mph caused widespread and significant damage in Council Grove, nearby Council Grove Reservoir and across much of the county. Trees, power lines, signs, boats, marina and homes were all damaged in various degrees. Power was out in many areas for 12 to 18 hours.

High winds, estimated to 90 mph, caused widespread damage to trees, power lines and some buildings across the county.

Winds estimated at 90 miles an hour caused trees to fall on a house. A picture window was shattered and two grain bins were blown away. A few miles away, winds blew away a machine shed. Lesser winds up to 60 miles an hour occurred at Hesston.

Very high winds, initially estimated at 110 mph, caused significant damage in the state park to campers, tenets, RV's, some buildings and the marina/dock area. One young boy was hit by flying debris and required several stitches to close the cut on his head.

There was widespread damage to trees, small buildings and farm equipment across the county. In rural Ramona a 70 foot tall silo was knocked onto a granary shed, destroying a tractor that was inside. One thousand pound straw bales were tossed around. Two cattle were killed by lightning.

Winds estimated to near 80 mph caused widespread tree, power line and structural damage in and around the city of Lawrence. Most of the city was without power for several hours.

Hurricane-force winds blew across the county as thunderstorms rumbled through. Eighty-two mph winds were recorded in Valley Center where a metal shed was blown over and fences were damaged. The winds were not as strong when they went across Wichita and were about 65 mph. Damage in Wichita was mainly broken tree limbs and downed fences. Winds were clocked at 101 mph in Goddard where three trailers blew over and 70 feet of sheet metal was peeled off the side of the Rubbermaid plant. Clearwater was the hardest hit where the fire department lost its roof and ceiling and half of the lumber company building was blown away. Damage just to power lines and poles was $10 million. One hundred fifty thousand Kansas Gas and Electric customers were without power--some for four days. One Andale farmer lost ten percent of his corn crop, otherwise there was no major crop loss.

The winds knocked down limbs and whole trees in Madison, where one tree fell on a house. Lesser winds of 60 mph passed over Eureka.

Damaging winds over 60 miles an hour began in Cassoday where 24 utility poles were either broke or blown over. The hardest hit was the Augusta area where four homes were totally destroyed and seven sustained major damage. Two mobile homes were destroyed. A woman was hospitalized when her mobile home was blown over and rolled three times. Sixty mobile homes in the Cedar Land Mobile Home Court had damage. The winds collapsed a storage shed at a car lot, while blowing debris damaged many vehicles on the lot. Damage in the Andover area was mostly from and to trees. Firework tents were knocked down or destroyed and traffic lights were knocked down. Damage estimates range from $10 thousand to $50 thousand. In El Dorado, 70 mph winds damaged the hospital and trees were blown down on the Courthouse lawn. Over 80 mph winds lasted ten minutes in Peabody. Eighty mph winds were reported in Douglass where there was extensive tree damage; the roof of an auto body shop was blown off and a church lost part of its roof. Total damage for the county was nearly $3 million. Utility power lines sustained $614,000 in damages.

High winds produced scattered damage to power lines, trees and some buildings across most of the county.

A Dericho wind storm moved northwest to southeast across northeast and central Kansas producing winds of 50 to 100 mph. The high winds caused widespread and significant damage to nearly every county. Numerous power lines were knocked down, trees uprooted with buildings and roofs damaged or destroyed. The most severe damage and highest winds appeared to occur in a line from near Marysville to Westmoreland/Emmett to Topeka to Lawrence. It was likely the worst "straight line" and most widespread wind storm in at least ten years. The local electrical utility, Kansas Power and Light, estimated damages to their system at $10 to $15 million.

Thunderstorm winds broke power poles and downed trees into power lines knocking out power to over 26,000 homes. Damages were estimated to be around $100,000.

Winds of 70 to 100 mph blew across the southeast part of the county. There was extensive tree damage. A large well-digging truck was blown over three miles west of Cheny with damage at $50 thousand.

From Clearwater, south along 120th road, there were numerous power lines down. In Mayfield, there was damage to a roof and a tractor-semitrailer was blown over on Highway 160. The Wellington Lake area was hit the hardest with over 100 mph winds. Five campers were blown over and one was destroyed. From Conway Springs to Anson, there was tree, roof and building damage. A barn was blown down and the high winds rolled a combine through a field. There was also structural damage to farm buildings in Perth as well as trees and power poles down.

Thunderstorm winds of up to 69 knots downed trees onto cars, homes and power lines across northern Leavenworth County. In Tonganoxie, the winds blew in the fronts of several stores. Damages from the storm amounted to over $250 thousand.

Ninety to 115 mph winds hit the Burden area. Big trees were uprooted, a horse barn collapsed and grain bins were destroyed. In Atlanta, a mobile home was blown over and demolished. A man inside at the time sustained a punctured lung and concussion and was hospitalized in fair condition. The winds, estimated at 85 mph, collapsed two brick walls and caused considerable tree damage. Sixty mph winds occurred in Cambridge and were estimated up to 80 mph in Rock where golf ball-size hail fell. The Winfield cooling tower sustained $103 thousand damage from 70 mph winds and there was heavy damage to the roof of Dexter High School.

Sixty to 80 mile an hour winds blew across the county with a line of thunderstorms. Power lines were down across the county. There was tree and house damage in Cedar Vale and Sedan.

A cattle truck was blown over four miles west of town and there were fallen trees in town.
