Four waterspouts were observed off the southern New Jersey coast in the midst of very moist and unstable atmospheric conditions. One waterspout was located 20 miles east of Barnegat, the other three were reported off Brigantine. One of the three moved inland as a weak tornado at the northern end of the barrier island city of Brigantine. Police said the tornado moved southward tearing off roof shingles and tree limbs along it short path. One resident had a 55-pound barbecue grill tossed about 150 feet from its original position and an outdoor table destroyed. The funnel dissipated rapidly after moving inland and was accompanied by small hail and very heavy rain.
