A 42 year old female was swimming off Asbury Park, New Jersey, near the Deal Lake intersection drive with the beach around 3PM Wednesday, September 20th. She was caught in a rip current and passed away the following day. This was indirectly caused by Tropical Storm Jose, which was located around 140 miles south-southeast of Nantucket at the time. The incident occurred within about 45 minutes of low tide, with a storm tide around +1.5 feet. Waves in the surf zone were estimated to be in the 5 to 7 foot range, with a period near 11 seconds from the east-southeast, based on offshore buoy data. Both air and water temperatures were above normal at the time, with a north-northwest wind gusting 15 to 20 mph.

What this means

A best track is the record a warning agency settles on after the storm, not what it said at the time: position, maximum sustained wind and central pressure every six hours, revised against every observation that came in later. Category is the Saffir-Simpson scale, which runs from Category 1 at 64 kt to Category 5 at 137 kt and reads wind only, so it says nothing about surge or rain. Accumulated cyclone energy adds up the square of the wind through the storm's life, so it counts strength and duration together.
