Strong winds associated with an intense area of low pressure off the North and South Carolina coasts created waves near 7 feet along much of the beaches of New Hanover County. At Carolina Beach, newspaper photos show beach erosion in excess of 5 feet in many areas. Much of the dune grass had also been eroded, leaving many houses with little protective barrier against future storms. At Kure Beach, officials estimated about 214,000 cubic yards of beach sand was washed out to sea. Estimated losses at Kure Beach are $2.14 million dollars. Monetary damages at Carolina Beach are unknown, pending the Army Corp's damage survey.

Large swells of up to 15 feet just offshore at the reef line with breakers as high as 10 feet affected the Palm Beach County coast during the day on May 8th. This resulted in severe beach erosion and coastal flooding along most of the Palm Beach County coast. The most severe erosion and flooding took place on Jupiter Beach where a lifeguard storage building was destroyed and coastal streets were closed due to the flooding. Beaches and beachfront parks were closed. A 27-foot outboard boat capsized just north of Manalapan, with the 2 occupants able to swim safely to shore. Moderate to severe beach erosion was reported at Juno Beach, South Palm Beach, Lantana, Delray Beach and Boca Raton.

High Surf occurred from Fernandina Beach south to Flagler Beach with 6 to 8 foot breakers. Significant beach erosion along the St Johns and Flagler County beaches...but most erosion occurred prior Andrea due to strong gradient flow from the coastal low that evolved into Andrea. Ten homes in the 2800 Block of South Ponte Vedra Beach, St. Johns County were threatened with undermining due to beach erosion. The Flagler Beach Pier had to be closed due to high surf on May 8th and was re-opened on the 9th. Minor to moderate beach erosion was reported around South 13th Street in Flagler Beach. The Florida Department of Transportation had to fill in areas near the seawall with sand.

What this means
A best track is the record a warning agency settles on after the storm, not what it said at the time: position, maximum sustained wind and central pressure every six hours, revised against every observation that came in later. Category is the Saffir-Simpson scale, which runs from Category 1 at 64 kt to Category 5 at 137 kt and reads wind only, so it says nothing about surge or rain. Accumulated cyclone energy adds up the square of the wind through the storm's life, so it counts strength and duration together.
