Tectonic Summary

The November 21, 2025, M 5.5 central Bangladesh earthquake occurred as the result of reverse faulting at shallow depth within the Indian plate. Focal mechanism solutions indicate rupture occurred on either a moderately dipping fault striking east or a moderately dipping fault striking west-northwest.

The earthquake occurred in central Bangladesh, about 25 km from the capital city, Dhaka. Although northern and southeastern Bangladesh are seismically active regions due to interactions between the India and Eurasia plates, the central regions where this earthquake occurred are more seismically quiescent. Since 1950, only 14 previous earthquakes of magnitude 5.5 or larger, including two magnitude 6 earthquakes, have occurred within 250 km of the November 21, 2025, earthquake.

This event is identified as the potential mainshock of an earthquake sequence.

At least 10 people were killed and over a hundred injured as a massive earthquake of magnitude 5.7 jolted Dhaka and parts of the country on Friday (November 21, 2025), damaging buildings, causing fires at several places and sending panic among residents.

Officials said four of the victims died in the capital Dhaka, five in Narsingdi, the epicentre of the tremor, and one in suburban river port town of Narayanganj.

Media reports suggested that in the industrial town on the outskirts of the capital Gazipur alone, at least 100 workers were injured at different units as they tried to rush out of buildings during the tremor.
