March 21, 2023 Earthquake: Laghman, Pakistan, Afghanistan

The U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude 6.5 earthquake with epicenter 40km south-southeast of Jurm district in Afghanistan at a depth of 187km hit the region on 21 March 2023. The death toll from the 6.5-magnitude earthquake which struck northeast Afghanistan near the border with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province (northwestern Pakistan) on 21 March has risen to 16. The most affected provinces are Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province in Pakistan and Badakhshan in Afghanistan. In Afghanistan, according to UN OCHA, at least 5 people were killed and 80 were injured. Associated Press reported 10 death in Afghanistan. 653 houses were damaged. In Pakistan, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reports 09 dead, 101 others injured, and 172 damaged houses (22 full, 150 partial), most of them in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa; 7 schools and 15 other buildings were also partially damaged; 1 mosque and 1 cattle shed was reported damaged. Sandi Yasin bridge was partially damaged in Ghizer. Landslides and road closures are reported. Cracks were also reported in buildings in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. In India, strong tremors were widely felt across the northern region including Jammu & Kashmir, Delhi NCR, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh and part of Northwest India, including Rajasthan (Jaipur and adjoining districts) and Gujrat. Tremors were also felt in Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and India.
