January 3, 2016 Earthquake: Impahl, India

A magnitude-6.7 earthquake struck far northeast India in the hours before sunrise Monday, causing major structural damage to several buildings near the epicenter and sending frightened residents running into the streets of cities there and in neighboring Bangladesh. At least 13 deaths and more than 100 injuries have been blamed on the earthquake. Three of the deaths were due to falling debris in and around Imphal, the capital of India's Manipur state, police said. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake's epicenter was 18 miles (29 kilometers) west of Imphal. Five other deaths in other parts of the state were also due to falling debris, said police officer A.K. Jalajit. According to the Associated Press, nearly 90 members of India's National Disaster Response Force, a specialized federal force for natural disasters, have left to check on remote areas, police said. In Bangladesh, which lies west of the epicenter, the Dhaka Tribune named five people who died during the earthquake, all due to collapsing or suffering cardiac arrest during or immediately after the quake. None of the deaths were blamed on traumatic injuries, but the newspaper's website said many high-rise buildings swayed during the tremor, and three residential buildings were left leaning to one side. At least 33 people in Bangladesh were injured, some after jumping from buildings fearing they might collapse. (reference #11334)

The injuries and fatalities were caused by falling debris around Imphal, the capital of India's Manipur state. Many buildings were damaged across the region as walls cracked and crumbled as the ground shook. The epicenter of the quake was in Manipur, 29 km (18 miles) west of Imphal, according to theUSGS.
