1968 Sept 25, 10:38:38.4 UTC, 15.6 N 92.6 W. Mexico-Guatemala Border region at least 15 dead, 500 injured and heavy property damage in southern Chiapas. Possible 7 foot tsunami at Salina Cruz. Depth 138 km, Magnitude 5.7 Mb (reference #1053)

Mexico-Guatemala border region. The shock caused 20 deaths and injured 500 in Mexico's southern Chia pas region. The most severe damage occurred at the village of Acapetagua, where about half the houses were leveled and ten persons killed. Highways and railroads were blocked by landslides. (reference #45)

Press reports at least 20 people killed and more than 500 injured. The Pacific Coast road which is part of the inter-American highway was blocked in several places by landslides and in other places it was reported awash by a six foot tsunami. Worst damage was at the village of Acapetahus where about half of the houses were leveled and ten people killed. At Mazatlan 20 per cent of the buildings collapsed and the rest were seriously damaged. Also affected were Arriaga, Tonala, Tapachula where power failures were reported, Tuxtla Gutierrey in Chiapas state and Villahermosa in Tabasco. (reference #14225)
