Strong destructive earthquake in the Pindus range (Tzoumerka mountains); 16,500 homeless, 9 dead, 8 severely injured, 48 slightly injured; 896 houses destroyed (of which 800 in the district of Arta); 3,900 houses damaged; the zone of maximum intensity (VIII-IX) included the villages of Drosopighi, Pramanta, Melisourgoe and Theodoriana (Arta); there was also damage in Ioannina and Trikkala; the macroseismic area was 250,000 km2 ; important landslides occurred along the Arakhthos River, near Megali Ghotista, on the northern slopes of the Peristeri range (Ioannina). Numerous aftershocks were felt between 1 and 5 May; four villages in Trikkala were completely destroyed and five others suffered 85 per cent damage as a result of the repeated shocks which occurred on 5 May.
