Agung volcano (8o20'S., 115o30'E.), which erupted on 19 February 1963, two days after slight earth tremors; the paroxysmal stages of the eruption occurred on 17 March 1963 (nuees ardentes, 1,550 dead) and 15 May 1963 (nuees ardentes, 120 dead); 2,000 houses were destroyed and 332,000 islanders had to be evacuated from Bali (Bulletin of Volcanic Eriptions, no. 3, 1963). It will be observed that the earthquake of 18 May followed, with a two day time lag, the second paroxysmal stage of the volcanic eruption. New tremor at the same focus four days later.
