“The disturbance seems to have travelled from the south-west to the north-east, and lasted about 10 seconds. It was accompanied by loud rumbling sounds, and was so pronounced in its effects that people rushed from shops and houses into the streets in alarm […] Houses were seen to perceptibly sway to and fro, and water tanks oscillated on their stands in an extraordinary fashion […] The chief damage, however, was to the town hall, and, judging by the results, the building would appear to have been in a direct line with the course of the disturbance […] Several chimneys of private houses were thrown down, but fortunately the inmates escaped with nothing worse than a severe fright. Considerable destruction was wrought among crockery in stores and in private houses, and things fell to the ground in an alarming way […] The shock appears to have been most severe in the low-lying part of the town, in an easterly direction, and also along the banks of the Hopkins River. ” (excerpt from Border Watch Sunday 11 April 1903, Page 4)
