February 11, 1879 Earthquake: Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire

This earthquake occurred in the eastern part of the Ivory Coast. It caused considerable damage within a narrow zone stretching from the coast east of Abidjan for about 300km to the north, affecting the tribal areas of the Agnis and Culangos. In the region of Krinjabo walls collapsed and roofs of houses were displaced or thrown down. In the region of Yaou a number of trees and roofs were thrown to the ground but walls remained upright. At Betie, houses were overturned while at Abenguru, Amelekia, Deimba and Bonduku people seated were thrown down by the shock, which caused roofs to collapse and walls to be badly shaken. The effects of the shock diminished rapidly to the west, becoming negligible in the regions of Bondu, Bankakagny-Tomora and Bofondo. To the east the shock caused alarm at Accra 355 km away (Press Reports ; Hubert, 1914). (reference #1214)
