October 1, 1869 Earthquake: Manila, N Mindoro, S Luzon, Philippines

1869, October 1, 11:35. Intensity VIII. Neighboring provinces east and south of Manila, and northern Mindoro. On Luzon the provinces chiefly affected were Rizal, Laguna, Cavite, and Batangas. In Manila this earthquake did considerable damage to quite a number of buildings. In the Provinces of Cavite and Batangas a few churches and conventos were wrecked. There was no loss of life. Repetitions were frequent during the 5 days immediately following the earthquake. (reference #1072)

1869, October 1, 03:35 GMT. Philippines, S. Luzon, Manila (Rizal, Laguna, Bulacan, Cavite, Batangas) and Northern Mindoro. Intensity II which corresponds to buildings may be unroofed or shattered and some may fall, the ground may be badly cracked in places and small landslips occur. (reference #1055)

1869, October 1, 11:15 a.m. [local time]. Southern Luzon and Mindoro: The first earthquake for which the records of the manila Observatory give the results an instrumental

observation. Time 11:35 a.m. Duration: 60 seconds. Direction: SSE-NNW. Amplitude: NNW-15o; SSE-

12o15'. There were no personal injuries except some bruises. The buildings have sustained some damage and some are left useless, but none has fallen... Cavite - the rooms of the old infantry barracks have fallen and the other public and private buildings of this port have sustained damage. As a result of the rush of employees to get out of the cigar factory, six suffered slight injuries. The fall of one of the shops in the arsenal injured five... Barasoain - fissures, from which water and sand issured, opened behind the church. An arch and the tower adjoining the church have fallen. Some stone houses have been damaged and a man was injured on the head. Some stone warehouses have fallen. (reference #1187)
