September 14, 1627 Earthquake: Bangui, Cagayan, W. Luzon Island, Philippines

1627, September (August). During a layover at Bangui of the Spanish Fleet, which was trying to drive the Dutch from Taiwan Island, there was an earthquake. Fourteen shocks were felt on the ships in one day. Several monasteries in Cagayan province were destroyed. The sea flooded the land for 4 km (1 league) and the waves uprooted trees. Brief information on the earthquake, with no mention of the tsunami, is given in a number of other publications.

1627, September. Northern Luzon: Fourteen earthquakes were felt in one day. A hill called "Los Caraballos" en route to Nueva Segovia, sank until level with its surroundings. Cagayan Province - some Dominican monasteries were ruined. Bangui, North, end of Luzon - earthquake felt on the boats anchored in the bay. Cagayan - many buildings were wrecked; an enormous mountain opened in the center with a tremendous gap; trees were overthrown by the terrific force of the waves of the sea which invaded the land for a distance of a league (about 3 miles). This is probably a tsunami.

1627, September. Northern Luzon. The earliest account of this earthquake which we have was written by a Jesuit in Manila in 1628. He related the attempt of the Governor of the Philippines to drive the Dutch from Formosa, how the fleet was scattered by bad weather, and how some of the galleys put in at Bangui on the north end of Luzon. While they were anchored there fourteen earthquake shocks were felt, even on the boats, in one day. A hill, called "Los Caraballos," on the route to Nueva Segovia, sank until level with its surroundings. Some Dominican monasteries in the province of Cagayan were ruined. BR, XXII, 212-213. The mountain now known as Caraballo is in the center of Luzon, at 16 N, 121 E, and is skirted by the highway which runs from Manila and central Luzon to Cagayan Province, the Nueva Segovia of the old days. The writer in 1628 was certainly exaggerating in saying that the mountain became "level"…

1627, August. Northern Luzon, intensity X. The historians mention it as one of the earthquakes which caused the greatest convulsions in northern Luzon, especially in Illocos Norte and Cagayan, but above all in the region of the Central Cordillera, Lepanto, and Bontoc. The data are somewhat vague. It is said that part of the northern Caraballo Mountains subsided.
