FOR WAYNE...SOUTHEASTERN LIVINGSTON AND ONTARIO COUNTIES...

At 442 PM EST, severe thunderstorms were located along a line
extending from 9 miles north of Sodus to near Bristol to 8 miles
northwest of Arkport, moving east at 50 mph.

HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

Locations impacted include...
Geneva, Canandaigua, Dansville, Fair Haven Beach State Park, Newark,

The showers which prompted the warning have weakened below severe

.WHAT HAS CHANGED...
The magnitude of expected wind gusts behind a cold front has
increased northeast of the Lakes through this evening. Wind
gusts up to 65 mph are expected northeast of Lake Erie and wind
gusts up to 55 mph are expected across Jefferson and northern
Lewis counties.

&&

.KEY MESSAGES...
1) Very strong southwest winds are expected region-wide through this
evening. The strongest wind gusts are expected northeast of Lake
Erie.

2) Snowmelt due to unseasonably mild temperatures and rain will
result in increased runoff through this weekend. Some gages in the
Buffalo Creeks are in action stage, but expected to stay below flood
stage. There is a low chance for any river/creek or ice jam flooding.

3) Another storm system will bring a period of gusty winds late
Saturday night and Sunday, and the potential for a wintry mix for
the Tug Hill Plateau and Saint Lawrence Valley Saturday evening.

4) It will turn colder Sunday...with a relatively short window of
accumulating lake effect snow downwind of the eastern Great Lakes
Sunday and Sunday night. There is high confidence that it will turn
even colder late next work week.

.DISCUSSION...
KEY MESSAGE 1...Very strong southwest winds are expected region-wide
through this evening. The strongest wind gusts are expected
northeast of Lake Erie.

A shortwave trough will move across the Great Lakes region today. An
associated surface low over northern Quebec will move northeast.
A strong, southerly push of mild air will continue across the
forecast area, with temperatures well above normal for early
January. Southerly winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts 40-50mph are
expected ahead of an advancing cold front early this afternoon. As
the baroclinic zone tightens as the front approaches the forecast
area today, a 55-65 kt low-level jet is expected to strengthen with
the core of the strongest winds moving just northwest of the
forecast area late this afternoon through early evening. GOES
satellite imagery shows a pocket of clearing just ahead of the front
and some clearing behind the front. Based on the GFS, a 1.5mb PV
anomaly is across Lake Huron and is forecast to move north of the
eastern Great Lakes through this evening. The surface front will
move through the forecast area between 3-8pm and southwest winds 25
to 35 mph with very strong gusts are expected. Due to the close
proximity of the core of the strongest winds aloft, the channeling
of Lake Erie and partial clearing, wind gusts up to 65 mph are
expected from the Lake Erie shoreline to the Niagara Frontier into
Monroe county. Isolated wind gusts up to 70 mph can't be ruled out
northeast of Lake Erie between 3pm -7pm. A High Wind Warning is in
effect for these locations. Saint Lawrence Valley, wind gusts up to
55 mph are expected, however the latest hi-res guidance has the
potential for an hour of gusts up to 60 mph immediately behind the
front. Based on the location of the strongest winds, less confidence
in clearing, and slightly weaker winds aloft, maintained the Wind
Advisory. Elsewhere, wind gusts of 45 to 50 mph are expected, with
the strongest gusts across the higher terrain across the western
Finger Lakes region.

Winds will rapidly diminish tonight.

KEY MESSAGE 2...Snowmelt due to unseasonably mild temperatures and
rain will result in increased runoff through this weekend. Some
gages in the Buffalo Creeks are in action stage and forecast to stay
below flood stage. There is a low chance for any river/creek or ice
jam flooding.

Rainfall amounts have ranged from 0.25-0.40" across far western NY
with less than 0.25" across the Finger Lakes region today. Rainfall
amounts have ranged from 0.25-0.70" across the Lake Ontario region
today. Additional rainfall amounts of up to 0.30" is possible on the
Tug Hill, less than 0.10" elsewhere today. A second area of low
pressure will bring another round of widespread rain late Saturday
into Saturday night. Forecast rainfall amounts of 0.25-0.50" is
expected Saturday through Saturday night. While overall rainfall
amounts from each system will not be particularly significant, the
combination of this rainfall and snowmelt due to continued mild
temperatures through Saturday will result in increased runoff.

While this will result in elevated streamflow in area rivers and
creeks...MMEFS data suggests that only a few of the Buffalo area
creeks may reach action stage...with very little risk of reaching
minor flood stage.

KEY MESSAGE 3...Another storm system will bring a period of gusty
winds late Saturday night and Sunday, and the potential for a wintry
mix for the Tug Hill Plateau and Saint Lawrence Valley Saturday
evening.

The next Pacific-based trough will deepen across the Mid-West and
Ohio Valley Saturday through Saturday night before moving across the
eastern Great Lakes region Sunday. Low pressure will deepen across
the Central Great Lakes Saturday night, and move north of the
forecast area Sunday. A strengthening low-level jet will move across
the forecast area with a plume of mild air and moisture Saturday
night. Most locations will be well above freezing, with the
exception of the Saint Lawrence Valley and Tug Hill Plateau, where a
wintry mix is possible as precipitation moves into the region
Saturday evening. Warm air will likely take over the colder air at
the surface and precipitation will change over to all rain (however
brief.) A cold front is expected to move across the region Saturday
night and gusty winds up to 50 mph are possible across far western
NY. Elsewhere, gusty winds up to 40 mph are possible. A Wind
Advisory is possible for locations adjacent and northeast of Lake
Erie.

KEY MESSAGE 4...It will turn colder Sunday...with a round of
accumulating lake effect snow expected downwind of the eastern Great
Lakes Sunday and Sunday night.

In the wake of Saturday night's cold front...steady cold air
advection will result in 850 mb temps falling to -8C to -10C by the
start of Sunday morning...then into the -11C to -14C range during
the day Sunday. In the presence of a swath of deeper wraparound
moisture pivoting eastward across the area...this will allow for a
period of accumulating lake enhanced/lake effect snow downwind of
the lakes...particularly from Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening
when synoptic moisture will be most favorable.

Initially...a general WSW flow may allow weak lake snows to first
develop across the Buffalo/Watertown areas by later Sunday
morning...with the snows then shifting south to areas east and east-
southeast of the lakes and gaining some strength Sunday afternoon
and evening as winds slowly veer and the aforementioned deeper
moisture arrives. The bulk of the accumulations should tend to focus
across areas east and east-southeast of the lakes owing to the
timing of the deeper moisture and an added boost from upslope
flow...though the expected movement of the lake bands may tend to
keep accumulations on the moderate side. The lake snows will then
wind down fairly quickly from west to east later Sunday night and
Monday morning as high pressure and much drier air build across the
region...with just a few remnant flurries/snow showers then lifting
back northward during Monday as winds back again.

Looking at the 500mb and 850mb pattern for the second half of next
week, multiple troughs will cycle through the Great Lakes region and
chances are leaning towards near to below normal temperatures.

.AVIATION /18Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Breezy south-southeasterly winds continue heading into this
afternoon while showers are exiting from west to east. Additionally,
a strengthening low level jet of 70 knots is overhead at 2kft.
Clearing to the west, over Lake Erie this afternoon, may support
some of these winds to mix down to the surface, especially when the
cold front passes across the region later this afternoon (19-21Z).

Speaking of the cold frontal passage, a few scattered rain showers
may pass across the region, with the major impacts to flight
conditions being the lowering ceiling heights to MVFR and a few IFR
ceilings across the higher terrain of the Southern Tier.

Dry air will then build in overnight, returning flight conditions
back to VFR from southwest to northeast.

Outlook...

Saturday...Mainly VFR deteriorating to IFR/MVFR due to rain later in
the day and mixing with or changing over to snow at night.

Sunday...MVFR/local IFR in snow showers, especially east of the
lakes. Windy with southwesterly/westerly gusts to 40 knots possible.

Monday...Lingering snow showers possible east of the lakes,
otherwise VFR.

Tuesday...Mainly rain showers possible, with some higher elevation
snow. Mainly VFR, however IFR is possible within snow showers.

Wednesday...MVFR/IFR possible due to rain showers and mix of rain
and snow showers.

.MARINE...
A 994mb low will quickly move northwest of the eastern Great Lakes
region today. Modest southerly winds will continue on the Lakes this
afternoon, before a strong cold front rushes across the region.
Strong, southwesterly flow will move across the Lakes behind the
front and bring a brief period of Gale force winds on both Lakes
through this evening. A Gale Warning is in effect from 18z through
3z Saturday. Winds will diminish overnight and Small Craft
Advisories will likely be needed on eastern Lake Erie and western
Lake Ontario through this evening and on eastern Lake Ontario
through Saturday morning.

There will be a brief lull in the winds and waves Saturday before
winds increase from the east with a second storm system for the
remainder of the weekend. This will bring greater wave action along
the western Lake Ontario waters Saturday and Saturday evening. Winds
become southwesterly Sunday, potentially again to near gale force.
Elevated southwest to westerly flow Monday and through mid-week will
maintain small craft conditions on the lakes.
