.SYNOPSIS...Northerly breezes will relax down the Colorado River
Valley late this afternoon with fair weather and passing high
clouds on Monday for much of the region. A potent storm system
dropping in from the north will bring widespread gusty winds
Tuesday and Wednesday, along with isolated mountain shower
activity across our eastern areas. Additional systems dropping in
from the north will keep our weather cool and breezy into next
weekend.

.UPDATE...Tonight's weather features light winds, partly cloudy
skies, and near average temperatures for early January, which means
lows in the low 40s for Las Vegas. Winds should remain light through
tomorrow before ramping up tomorrow night, becoming gusty by Tuesday
morning. No changes to the forecast appear necessary at this time.

.DISCUSSION...through next weekend.

Fair weather dominates the forecast area this afternoon with
passing high clouds and lingering north winds down the Colorado
River Valley. Surface pressure gradients will relax even more on
Monday allowing for the Colorado River to have a brief break in
the blustery conditions and enjoy one more day of pleasant weather
before a sharp transition to windy and cooler weather arrives.

This transition will occur as the northwesterly flow aloft that
is currently set up across the West buckles, in response to a
pairing of an incoming shortwaves that phase together as they drop
south. The first of these waves is currently approaching the
PacNW coastline, while the second will be dropping south from the
Canadian Rockies on Tuesday. These waves will work to form a
closed low over western Arizona by Tuesday evening, with a strong
1040mb+ surface high building into the northern Great Basin behind
it. Overall, a very favorable pattern for gusty north winds.

The Extreme Forecast Tool (EFI) tool continues paint anomalous
winds across much of the area, with strongest winds favored along
the Colorado River and near Laughlin which climatologically tend
to be the windiest in these set ups. MOS guidance has persistently
been hinting at high winds near Laughlin with sustained winds of
30 - 40 mph channeled through the terrain. NBM probabilities
exceeding 80 percent for 55 mph gusts, and even reaching 70
percent for 70 mph gusts. With increasing confidence in high
winds, went ahead and issued a High Wind Watch for the Colorado
River Valley for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Elsewhere, probabilities for high winds exceeding 55 mph are also
quite elevated across much of Inyo County, and to a lesser extent
San Bernardino County. The night crew will be taking a closer look
at those areas tonight, as well as the potential for widespread
wind advisories that would include the city of Las Vegas.

In addition to the gusty winds, sharply cooler temperatures will
invade the region Tuesday, with temperatures remaining cool in the
unsettled pattern that will last into next weekend. A few isolated
showers may develop under the cold pool aloft as it tracks south,
favoring mainly the southern Great Basin late Monday night and
into Tuesday morning, before spreading south into the Colorado
River Valley and Mohave County Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday
morning.

The closed low will drop south into Mexico by Wednesday but the
pattern will remain unsettled a stiff northerly flow builds across
the West and additional disturbances drop south through next
weekend. These additional disturbances will work to reinforce the

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Northeast winds this afternoon
could occasionally reach eight to 10 knots. Lighter, diurnally
driven winds are expected tonight and on Monday. Strong north winds
will arrive Tuesday with the strongest winds late Tuesday morning
and through the afternoon with greater than 90% probability of 30 kt
gusts. Lower ceilings (<10k) are possible after midnight on Monday
night and into Tuesday morning.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...No operationally significant clouds or weather expected
through Monday before low ceilings reach far northern Lincoln County
Monday evening. North winds gusts of 30 knots are expected (>60%
probability) in the Colorado River Valley this afternoon. These
winds will decrease tonight and into Monday and be predominantly
less than 12kts. A much strong round of north winds will reach the
southern Great Basin late Monday and spread across the Mojave Desert
Tuesday. The strongest winds will be once again down the Colorado
River Valley where wind gusts will exceed 40 kts (>70% probability)
and may exceed 50 kts. Lower ceilings may also expand farther south
Tuesday.
