.SYNOPSIS...Seasonal temperatures and light breezes today. Our next
system arrives Monday and Tuesday, bringing strong winds and leaving
below-normal temperatures in its wake. Light precipitation chances
return to the northern half of the area with minor winter impacts
possible in the Sierra and Spring Mountains. Temperatures moderate
in the second half of the week as passing systems bring periods of
gusty, cooler conditions.

.UPDATE...Light winds and mild temperatures this evening across most
of the forecast area. Precipitation chances begin to increase on the
Sierra crest early Monday as gusty southwest winds ramp up areawide
through the day. Widespread Wind Advisories go into effect between
8am and 11am and continue into Tuesday. High Wind Watches are in
effect for much of Inyo County as well as far southern Nye County
and western and central Clark County (including Las Vegas). These
High Wind Watches will be upgraded to either Wind Advisories or High
Wind Warnings on the next shift, with special consideration to areas
prone to strong downslope winds. The primary areas of concern
include Highway 395 near Olancha (60% chance of 58+ mph) and Highway
95 near Indian Springs (70% chance of 58+ mph). No changes were made
this evening, as the current forecast looks to be in good shape.

.DISCUSSION...through Saturday.

The ridge axis has shifted just east of our area, allowing a WSW
flow to develop aloft as our next system approaches. At the surface,
we'll see some southwest breezes this afternoon. Gusts of 15-30 mph
will enhance vertical mixing and bring highs to seasonal values, but
otherwise should not cause any impacts.

Things change tomorrow as the trough moves in, inducing a strong
pressure gradient from the SoCal coast into central Utah. This
gradient is going to drive gusty southwest winds across the entire
area, with impacts expected from southwestern San Bernardino County
up to northern Mohave County and areas north. Widespread gusts of 40-
55 mph are likely (70%) in these locations. The primary forecast
uncertainty remains the magnitude and extent of downslope winds in
the lee of the Sierra and Spring Mountains. Forecast soundings from
hi-res models show stable layers above ridgetop, but the models
themselves are somewhat reluctant to bring gusts of 55+ to the
western portions of the Owens and Las Vegas valleys. Because of
lingering uncertainty, opted to hold off on making any decisions
with the High Wind Watch for these areas. Regardless of whether it
becomes an advisory or warning, anyone with plans to drive US-395 or
US-95 on Monday should be prepared for hazardous crosswinds. High-
profile vehicles will be at risk of tipping over. As the trough
pushes through Monday night and Tuesday, winds will shift to the
northwest. In the northwesterly wind regime, chances for impactful
winds are highest in our southern Nevada zones where gusts of 40-50
mph should linger through Tuesday afternoon.

While there will be precipitation with this system, the primary
focus is on the impactful winds. Rain/snow chances are largely
limited to western Inyo County, the southern Great Basin, the Spring
Mountains, and the AZ Strip. Rain amounts in the lower elevations
expected to be less than 0.10", while the higher terrain could see
0.25"-0.50". However, with snow levels starting around 7000-8000
feet and dropping to ~4000 feet as precip ends, any winter impacts
will be limited. The mountain areas such as Aspendell and Mt.
Charleston are forecast to be in the 1-4" range while places like
Pioche and Colorado City a ~10% chance of seeing 2"+.

By Wednesday, this system will be well off to our east. The active
pattern continues in its wake, but the systems get progressively
weaker and drier. These additional shortwaves are forecast to pass
through/by on Thursday and Saturday, bringing periods of gusty,
cooler conditions. Otherwise, lingering breezes, near-normal
temperatures, and dry conditions continue into next weekend.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 06Z Forecast Package...South
winds are likely overnight, with occasional fluctuations to
southeast and southwest. Winds will begin to increase Monday
morning, becoming southwest with gusts around 30 knots by around
noon. The strongest gusts of around 35 knots are expected in the
evening and overnight, when mountain waves will be a concern. Few to
scattered clouds around 8000 feet are expected to develop in the
afternoon and persist through the evening. It is unlikely, but not
impossible, that this deck could briefly go broken between 6 PM and
9 PM.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...For the 06Z Forecast Package...Southerly winds are
expected over most of the region overnight, with the exceptions of
the usual nighttime winds such as westerly in Barstow and northerly
in Bishop. The strongest gusts of 30 to 40 knots will be over
mountains such as the Sierra Nevada and the Springs. Very strong
southwesterly winds are expected Monday and Monday night, with gusts
of 40 to 60 knots in the mountains and 30 to 50 knots in the
deserts. A cold front will reach the southern Great Basin Monday
afternoon and push through much of the Mojave Desert Monday night,
shifting winds to northwesterly with speeds decreasing. VFR
conditions are expected for most of the region, except for lower
ceilings and snow showers over the Sierra Nevada Monday, a band of
MVFR clouds developing in the Mojave Desert Monday afternoon and
tracking southeast with the front Monday evening, and wraparound low
clouds behind the front in Lincoln County Monday evening.
