.KEY MESSAGES...

- An intense late winter/early spring storm system remains on
  track to bring thunderstorms, very strong winds and snow to
  the area Tuesday and Tuesday night with winds lasting into
  Wednesday.

- Thunderstorms are expected during the overnight hours tonight
  into early Tuesday morning and primarily capable of damaging
  hail and winds.

- Winds strengthen Tuesday evening with gusts up to 60 mph
  possible with a gust up to 70 mph possible at times. A high
  wind warning is in effect for Tuesday afternoon through
  Wednesday morning.

- Rain changing over to snow Tuesday late evening could bring a
  few hours of blizzard conditions generally during late evening
  into the overnight period. Snow amounts are expected to range
  from 1-2 inches along the Highway 36 corridor with 60 mph
  winds as snow falls causing possible white out conditions for
  a few hours. A winter storm watch remains in effect for north
  central and northeast Kansas Tuesday night.

.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 304 PM CST Mon Mar 3 2025

This afternoon, satellite data show the upper air pattern across the
CONUS exhibits a deep now just off the northeast coast. A highly
amplified ridge has shifted east over the Mississippi Valley
regions. The storm of interest for this period is deepening over the
Four Corners region and lifting into the central Rockies at this
hour.

The primary impacts for this forecast cycle continue to focus on the
Tuesday and Wednesday time frames as the storm over the Four Corners
emerges from the central Rockies and quickly deepens into a very
strong and impressive mid-latitude early spring/late winter cyclone.
Cluster analysis and standardized anomalies continue to suggest high
confidence in an intense low pressure system will set up across the
region. This should bring strong advection fields in place which
will help draw sufficient moisture poleward to help a narrow swath
of mid level moisture set up central portions of the area tonight
into Tuesday morning. Some guidance suggests that mostly elevated
MUCAPES could reach to around 1000-1500 J/kg with height falls
steepening mid-level lapse rates to around 7C/km. Shear around 40-50
kts could help support a few strong or perhaps a severe storm
capable of mostly hail around quarter size. The trend has been for
storms to begin earlier and further west, so thinking most of the
first round of storms will be tonight and end before tomorrow
morning as they push east across the area.

Tuesday afternoon will see another window of opportunity for storms
to develop, however, most sounding profiles suggest a more deeply
saturated sounding which may lead to mostly heavy rainfall with some
tall skinny CAPE. Therefore, the overall severe threat appears to be
lower than Monday night. With flash flood guidance generally over
the total QPF amounts forecast, not anticipating on flooding
concerns at this time. The dry slot with this system looks to limit
precipitation potential over southwestern areas initially but a
large deformation zone develops on the backside of the upper level
system as it deepens the parent low lifts into northern MO/southern
Iowa. Expect much of the day to see rain but then the change to snow
takes place as sufficiently cold air is pulled into the central
Plains by Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning. Expecting only
light snow amounts in a range of 1-2 inches over northeastern areas
mainly along highway 36 to a dusting over southern areas but all
snow will fall with very strong wind fields in place. Winds could
reach sustained of 35 to 40 mph for several hours with gusts to
around 50-60 mph and possibly up to 70 mph especially over north
central and northeastern Kansas. Some areas could see near blizzard
conditions develop. A high wind warning is in effect across the area
and a winter storm watch currently remains in effect over northern
counties.

Another trough over the western CONUS breaks apart with the northern
stream energy working over the area by lat week bringing minimal
impacts at this point but could see a mix of rain and snow over
northern areas along the KS/NE border.

Many issues of concern through this forecast. Still expect at
least scattered convection to start but this should exit MHK for
several hours will potentially lingering in the TOP/FOE
area. Will keep IFR cigs through this time there but confidence
in persistent IFR is not high. Winds become uncertain around
18Z with an organizing surface low in the vicinity but northwest
winds increasing quickly late in the forecast with 50 knot
gusts possible. Precip should become more steady with a switch
to snow after 00Z but exact timing and intensity are far from
certain.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of central Kansas,
east central Kansas, north central Kansas, and northeast Kansas.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight

Thunderstorms are expected to develop over central into north-
central Kansas later tonight and move east across the area
overnight. Hail and wind are still expected to be the primary
hazards with these storms.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

Additional thunderstorms may develop Tuesday afternoon over parts
of northeast and east central Kansas. There is a marginal risk for
severe weather with these storms.

Very strong winds from the northwest are expected to develop late
in the afternoon Tuesday and persist into Wednesday morning. Wind
gusts between 50 and 60 mph are possible with brief periods of
gusts up to 70 mph. A high wind warning has been issued for the
entire area.

Rain is forecast to change over to snow late Tuesday evening into
the overnight period. These winds with falling snow could create
blizzard conditions. The snow amounts are not going to be the
problem but white out conditions could make travel nearly
impossible while the snow is falling. A winter storm watch remains
in effect for parts of north central and northeast Kansas Tuesday
night.
