.SHORT TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Issued at 353 AM MDT Mon Mar 31 2025

Currently...an upper shortwave trough is currently tracking east out
of Colorado and quickly into western Kansas early this morning.  A
few lingering showers will continue near the Kansas border through 4
AM, shifting east away from the area.  There is some areas of fog
across El Paso County this morning with a few areas near half to 1
mile.  This fog will continue through daybreak.  Temperatures are
cool, with 30s and 40s across the Plains, and 20s over the San Luis
Valley.

Today...a strong westerly jet is currently progressing across Utah,
and will spread across Colorado through this afternoon.  Overall,
mostly dry conditions are expected.  A stray snow shower cannot be
ruled out over the Central Mountains through this afternoon.  Little
to no snow accumulation is forecast through this afternoon.

As the upper jet moves into the area, strong mixing will lead to
dangerous fire weather conditions this afternoon from the San Luis
Valley, east into the Plains.  The main question will be timing, as
a couple of the high-res model solutions are slow to mix out.  Have
a feeling it will be a quicker onset of red flag conditions than
those solutions show.  Wind gusts in excess of 40 mph will combine
with humidity values under 15 percent to produce the high fire
danger. The other question will be how far east the strong westerly
winds push.  Ahead of this dry surge, winds will be southerly with
higher humidity values.  The dry surge does appear to push to near
the Kansas border by late afternoon into the early evening. Areas of
blowing dust are possible across the San Luis Valley and portions of
the Plains this afternoon. With the mixing today, temperatures will
warm nicely, with 60s to near 70 across the region.

Tonight...an upper shortwave is forecast to strengthen over Utah,
forcing the jet aloft to increase and turn more southwesterly by
morning.  There could be a small potential for downslope winds after
3 AM along the Eastern Mountain lee slopes.  The more southwesterly
flow is not as favorable for downslope, but the shear profile may
support a brief window.  At this time, winds look to gust near the
mountains in the 40 to 50 mph range, but a few higher gusts may be
possible.  There could be a few areas of blowing dust overnight into
Tuesday morning.

Snow will also be on the increase overnight along the Continental
Divide.  Snow could be heavy at times for the Central Mountains,
with banding possible by Tuesday morning.  Snow accumulations of 2
to 5 inches are possible through the morning hours over the Central
Mountains.  Snow will also be on the increase across the San Juan
Range by morning.  A quick couple of inches are possible by morning

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Issued at 353 AM MDT Mon Mar 31 2025

Tuesday: Tuesday brings the first of several active days of weather
to south central and southeastern Colorado. A broad and messy trough
will begin to push southward and over the area, bringing increased
forcing and support. Along with the forcing, at least modest
moisture will be in place. With the forcing and moisture, snow
showers are expected to develop along the mountains late Monday
night into Tuesday morning, with showers persisting through the day.
Given the additional support in place, showers are also expected to
push off of the higher terrain and spread across the valleys during
the day. Elsewhere though, dry conditions are anticipated. Along
with all of that, Tuesday will bring another windy day. As diurnal
mixing becomes established during the day, stronger winds aloft will
become mixed to the surface, with widespread 40-50 mph wind gusts,
and gusts up to around 65 mph possible, particularly for the San
Luis Valley. In addition, critical fire weather conditions are
expected across the plains. As winds start to increase during the
day, and humidity values drop to 10-15%, fire danger will become
high for much of the plains region. Beyond all of that, a cool and
relatively cloudy day is anticipated for much of the area. Speaking
of temperatures, with the unsettled pattern starting to influence
the region, temperatures are expected to hover around seasonal
values for the day.

Wednesday - Sunday: For the rest of the week and through the
weekend, active weather continues for south central and southeastern
Colorado. The aforementioned broad and messy trough will remain in
place, with multiple shortwaves ejecting over the area within the
broader flow. With the periods of heightened forcing from the
shortwaves, and moisture remaining in place, precipitation chances
will stay elevated through this period, especially along the
mountains where forcing will be greatest. Otherwise, increased cloud
cover is anticipated, with light to breezy winds for many. Looking
at temperatures, a cool down is expected, as the unsettled pattern
sits over the area, with a couple of cold front passages later
during this period.

.AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z TUESDAY/...
Issued at 1128 AM MDT Mon Mar 31 2025

VFR conditions expected at the terminals over the next 24 hour
period with winds being the primary concern. Winds are trending
towards a more persistent easterly direction at KPUB through the
afternoon with the wind shift from the southwest occuring closer
to 03z. However it is still possible, though a lower
probability, that winds could shift from the southwest an hour
or two sooner. Otherwise KCOS and KALS will see increasing
southerly winds today with gusts in the 30-40 kt range,
strongest gusts at KALS. Winds will decrease this evening at all
three terminals though wind shear will become a concern,
especially at KCOS after midnight. Southwest winds will
increase Tue morning with gusts to 35 to 45 kts and isolated
gusts to around 50 kts possible for KALS and KPUB during the

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Patchy fog will impact El Paso County this morning through 9 AM.
Visibility down to 1 mile or less could pose a hazard during the
morning commute.

A few light snow showers will be possible over the Central Mountains
through this afternoon with little to no snow accumulations
expected.  Snow will increase tonight along the Continental Divide.
Areas of the Central Mountains could see 2 to 5 inches by morning,
while areas of the San Juan Range see 1 to 3 inches.

High fire danger due to strong winds and low humidity will spread
from the San Luis Valley, east into the Plains this afternoon and
evening.  Wind gusts 40 to 50 mph are possible, along with areas of
blowing dust.  If a fire should start, the strong winds will likely
cause rapid growth.

There is a low potential for downslope winds after 3 AM tonight
along the lee slopes of the Rampart Range, and the southern Sangre
de Cristo Mountains.  Gusts near 50 mph are possible, with a locally
higher gusts possible.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

Tuesday brings the first of many active days of weather. Snow will
expand across the higher terrain during the day, especially across
the central mountains, with 4 to 10 inches of snowfall by Wednesday
morning. This could cause slick roads and difficult travel along
mountain roads and passes.

Winds will also be strong Tuesday, with widespread 40-50 mph wind
gusts expected, and possibly up to 65 mph, particularly within the
San Luis Valley. Travel could be difficult along north-south
orientated roads for high profile and light weight vehicles.

In addition, critical fire weather conditions are expected across
the plains Tuesday, given the strong winds and humidity values
between 10-15 percent.

For the rest of the week and through the weekend, active weather
continues, with precipitation chances remains elevated, especially
for the mountains.
