.SYNOPSIS...Hot conditions will peak late this afternoon and
Saturday with gusty winds along shore by Sunday afternoon. Generally
warm and dry conditions will continue through the start of June.

KEY MESSAGES:

-Hot conditions with highs near 100 across the interior and moderate
Heat Risk through Saturday.

-Strong gusty winds near shore Sunday and Monday afternoon.

-Very slight chance (10%) of isolated dry thunderstorms over high
terrain on Sunday.

.DISCUSSION...A strong but narrow ridge of high pressure
has built across the area today, promoting generally calm wind and
clear skies across the interior. Both factors have allowed for
strong warming with interior highs spiking into the mid 90s by early
afternoon. Some isolated highs at 100 are likely (70% chance)
representing the warmest day of the year so far. Still hot but
cooler (by 2 to 4 degrees) will remain across the area during the
day Saturday. Given the short nature of the event, the overall heat
risk is moderate. Marine influence and a strong sea breeze have
kept the immediate coast much cooler with marine air and
fog extending as high as around 1000 feet in elevation.

High pressure will gradually eject south and east with a robust mid
level trough stalling over the eastern Pacific by Sunday. This will
setup a very strong pressure gradient along shore just over the
coastal waters. The gradient will generate very strong north winds
throughout the waters but also in exposed areas along the coast.
Exposed ridges like in the King Range and Klamath Mountains in Del
Norte could see gusts as high as 50 mph, though stable marine air
will generally limit gusts at low elevations. Still gusts around 40
mph are most likely at low elevations during the afternoon. There
remains some slight potential (30%) for marginal wind advisory
conditions along the coast with gusts over 45 mph at low elevations.
The risk is greatest (60%) on headlands around Crescent City.

The trough over the Pacific will weaken and move inland by the end
of the weekend and into early next week. As the trough moves inland,
there is some slight potential for isolated thunderstorms over the
interior Sunday or Monday afternoon. The overall chance is currently
low (10%) with lack of moisture being the main issue. Moisture
transport will highly depend on the path a possible cutoff low along
the coast which remains very uncertain. Any storms that do form,
however, will be dry and may pose a fire weather concern. Wind along
shore will also gradually decrease after Monday, though some
moderate afternoon gusts remain most likely through around mid week.
Long range ensembles show generally high confidence in warm, dry
conditions continuing through the first week of June. /JHW

.AVIATION...(18Z TAFs)...Coastal LIFR conditions are present with low
ceilings and degraded visibilities due to a surface inversion. As
daytime heating increases, this inversion is expected (70-80%
probability) to break apart around 21-22Z leading to VFR/MVFR
conditions through the afternoon. IFR-to-LIFR conditions are likely
to reform this evening (~03Z) due to low cloud levels under 1000ft
and misty conditions creating degraded visibilities along the NW
California coast. A southerly reversal is forecasted leading to
southern winds possibly surging stratus along the Redwood coast late
this evening.  KUKI is forecasted VFR through the TAF period with
possible density altitude changes during the day due to anomalously
high temperatures early in the season

.MARINE...Northerly winds continue today through the weekend into
next week. These consistant north winds are creating steep wind
waves across the outer waters. A 1038mb high pressure center
offshore over the NE Pacific will build this weekend and interact
with a deep low pressure center over the California interior. A very
tight pressure gradient between the high and the low surfacen
pressure centers is forecast to develop over the waters, resulting
in a storm watch (>48kt gusts) in the northern outer waters and full
gales warnings across all the other waters with very steep and
hazardous 18 to 25 foot seas by Sunday afternoon and evening.
Guidance continues to indicate high probabilities (>60%) for gales
continuing into early next week (Mon and Tue), especially across the
outer waters. Seas will most likely remain quite elevated, around 15-
20 feet.
