.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 415 AM CST Mon Mar 3 2025

A significant high wind event is the primary focus of this forecast
period (Tuesday and Tuesday Night). Overnight water vapor loop and
objective analysis fields showed a large upper level low forming
across the Great Basin region. Pressures were falling in the lee of
the Rockies across eastern Colorado, and south winds have also held
steady much of the night in response to the slowly increasing
pressure gradient. The south wind continued to draw up moderate low
level moisture with dewpoints in the mid 40s, mainly across the
western portion of the DDC forecast area (west of Highway 83).
Low clouds will continue through late morning, but there will be a
scattering out of the stratus from southwest to northeast through
the day. Areas that see sun by midday should warm nicely through
60s, and even some lower 70s along/west of Highway 83.

Moving on to later this evening, there will be a rapid northward
transport of gulf moisture into south central Kansas, greater than
55F dewpoints, and there will be a line of storms developing along
the downslope-modified Pacific cold front. We will have to watch for
the possibility of severe storms across Barber County late this
evening per latest HRRR trends... as extreme low level wind shear
will be present with 0-1km SRH values 400-550 m2/s2. If we even see
just marginal boundary layer instability, then there will be an
attendant QLCS tornado risk, perhaps as far west as Barber County.
The latest Day One SPC Tornado Outlook does have a 2% risk area
clipping the eastern half of Barber County. It is possible this may
even pull back west another 15 to 30 miles, so this is something the
day shift will really need to assess further.

The next, and main hazard for our forecast area, will be the high
wind event on Tuesday. As the mid level cyclone reorganizes and
shifts southeast during the day Tuesday, the low level cyclone
(surface to 850mb) will deepen further and a surge of north wind
will develop west of the low Tuesday morning along the Colorado
line. High wind will develop at the surface quite rapidly along the
Colorado line, as early as sunrise across Hamilton County. We will
likely see 60+ mph wind gusts out of the north quite early in the
day out west, but the eastward progression of the high wind will
translate east at a fairly slow pace, reaching Garden City-Liberal
by 11 AM CST...Highway 283 WaKeeney-Dodge-Englewood line by 1
PM...and Highway 281 St. John-Pratt-Med Lodge by 4 PM or so (all
based on the 06Z HRRR run).

The entire NWS DDC forecast area of 27 counties are now expected to
see high wind, and we have added Kiowa, Pratt, Comanche, and Barber
to the High Wind Watch. The worst of the wind is expected to be
Highway 283 and points west to the Colorado line as high winds will
hit during the peak diurnal time of the day with respect to boundary
layer mixing. Looking at latest GFS Bufr soundings for GCK and DDC,
momentum transfer fields support frequent gusts above 60 mph and
peak potential gust (top of the mixed layer) around 70 mph. There is
also support from the ECMWF Ensemble system as the mean 6-hour peak
gust field valid 18-24Z Tuesday is in the lower 60s mph with 15 to
20% of the ensemble members 70+ mph. In addition to the wind,
dangerous blowing dust conditions may also complicate the situation,
so we have added in blowing dust to the grids, especially along/west
of Highway 283. Last but not least, some of the latest runs of
models are showing a major wrap-around of moisture/QPF back down
into central and perhaps portions of southwest Kansas late Tuesday
afternoon and evening. This precipitation may be in the form of a
wet snow given continued cold air advection. Please keep checking
back for updates concerning all the potential hazards coming up on
Tuesday into Tuesday Night.

South winds at 20 kts will become southeast with a diurnal
backing of the wind by 00z, and then veer to the southwest
later this evening ahead of a cold front. In the wake of the
front, winds will increase to 25-40 kts from the north between
13 and 17z, with gusts as high as 45-50 kts at KGCK and KLBL.
Some reduction in visibility is possible from blowing dust,
especially at KGCK toward the end of the period.

The Fire Weather Watch has been upgraded to a Red Flag Warning, and
we have added in Seward, Kearny, and Haskell as the dry intrusion
air stream advances east through the evening with continued 15% RH
or less well after sunset as west-southwesterly winds remain quite
strong in the 20 to 30 mph range. Conditions late this afternoon may
be extremely critical at times across Morton and Stanton counties in
particular, so our fire manager partners across these counties in
particular will need to be cognizant of the dangerous combination of
40+ mph wind gusts and RH values as low as 10% for a couple hours
late this afternoon.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

A Red Flag Warning is in effect for critical fire weather
conditions forecast to develop across far southwest Kansas ahead
of a powerful early spring storm system. Please refer to the
latest Fire Weather Message for more detailed information.

A line of strong to severe thunderstorms is forecast to develop
across south central Kansas, including Barber County, late this
evening. The greatest risk will be damaging wind gusts and perhaps
an isolated tornado.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

A High Wind Watch remains in effect for all of southwest and west
central Kansas, as well as south central Kansas. Widespread wind
gusts of 60 mph or greater are forecast across the entire region
with sporadic 70 mph wind gusts possible between Highway 283 and
the Colorado line Tuesday afternoon.
