.SYNOPSIS...

A northwest to southeast oriented band of light snow currently
extends from St. Lawrence Island toward the Alaska Peninsula with up
to an additional 1-2 inches. A mature cyclone is also spinning north
across the Gulf of Alaska and will bring 1-2 inches of snow to the
Upper Tanana Valley this evening. Elsewhere across Northern Alaska,
mostly sunny skies have prevailed this morning, but cloudiness is
increasing as the Gulf of Alaska low presses inland. Mostly upper
level clouds spread across the interior tonight and Thursday as the
next upper level low approaches the Alaska Peninsula Thursday night.
A warming trend is expected as clouds and southerly winds spread
across interior Alaska then spreading across the North Slope
Thursday night into Friday.

.DISCUSSION...

Central and Eastern Interior...

- Light snow moves over the Upper Tanana Valley this evening with up
to 2 inches of snow possible by Thirsday morning.
- Increasing clouds and southerly flow allow for a warming trend
with above freezing temperatures possible as early as Friday.
- Occasionally gusty east winds over the Dalton Highway summits
continue tonight before diminishing on Thursday.
- South winds gusting up to about 50 mph are possible through
Isabelle Pass Thursday night and Friday.

West Coast and Western Interior...

- Light snow continues for St. Larence Island southeast toward
Chevak with up to 2 inches of additional snowfall by Thursday AM.
- Generally cool and dry weather persists until light snow chances
spread northward Friday night through the weekend.
- East to northeast winds remain elevated through the Bering Strait
and Chukchi Sea, gusts as high as 40 mph at Gambell.

North Slope and Brooks Range...

- Northeast winds continue to produce blowing and drifting snow at
Point Lay and this may continue through Saturday.
- A shorter period of blowing snow is possible at Barter Island late
tonight through Thursday.
- Below normal temperatures prevail with wind chills persistently in
the -30F to -50F range until late this weekend, coldest at Point Lay.

Forecast Discussion and Analysis...

Generally low impact weather prevails throughout the forecast period
as southerly flow increases between a Bering Sea low and ridging
over western Canada. Southerly flow across the Alaska Range is
likely to result in above freezing temperatures across portions of
the southern interior including Fairbanks, Delta Junction, the White
Mountains and locations in between. A persistent freeze-thaw cycle
is possible every day for about a week between Friday Feb 28th and
Thursday Mar 6th. A series of shortwaves embedded within the
southerly flow allows for light snowfall spreading north along the
West Coast. While snowfall intensity is expected to be light, it
also appears to persist for much of next week. This may allow for
localized double-digit snowfall totals over a 4-6 day time frame
next week. The highest amounts are expected across higher elevation
locations between the YK-Delta and the western Brooks Range
including the Nulato Hills. While snow is expected to be the
predominant p-type, rain may mix in on the eastern fringes of the
precipitation shield especially at elevations near sea level. This
persistently amplified pattern appears to break down later next week
when ensemble means advertise upper level troughing spreading across
the region.
