.SYNOPSIS...A cold and unsettled weather pattern is expected for
the week ahead as a series of storm systems with northern origins
move through. The next of these waves arrives over the weekend
with snow and strong winds in the Sierra with isolated to
scattered showers and blustery conditions elsewhere. The weather
will remain cool into next week with another storm system
suggested by midweek.

.UPDATE...Based off 930 am satellite imagery, skies have cleared
over the northwestern portion of our CWA while mostly cloudy
conditions continued elsewhere. The HREF has cloud cover clearing
from northwest to southeast through the morning into the early
afternoon hours with mostly clear skies forecast everywhere by
mid afternoon. The clearing skies will allow daytime heating to
warm temperatures to above normal in most areas this afternoon.
Otherwise, we are expecting northerly winds today gusting 25-35
mph across our northern areas and 20-25 mph in our southern areas
including parts of the Las Vegas Valley. Winds will slowly
decrease tonight but could remain elevated throughout the night
in our southeast CWA locations including Laughlin, Needles, and
Kingman.

This all appears to be captured well in the current forecast so
no updates are needed at this time.

.PREV DISCUSSION...136 AM PST Fri Jan 5 2024...

.SHORT TERM...through the weekend.

A quick moving shortwave will drop down the eastern Great Basin
and into the Four Corners today spreading a shield of mid and high
clouds across the region this morning along with a reinforcement
of breezy north winds. Otherwise, temperatures today will top out
near seasonal normals, with temps the remainder of the forecast
period trending colder than normal.

A larger trough will drop southeastward from British Columbia on
Saturday into Sunday bringing sharply cooler temperatures and
gusty winds to the region. Given the continental trajectory,
significant precipitation impacts are not expected. However, very
strong winds in the Sierra combined with a period of moderate
snowfall Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning will make for
dangerous winter conditions in the Eastern Sierra Slopes and near
Aspendell. Ensemble guidance suggests the ridgetops in the Sierra
could see wind gusts in the 50-70 mph range, and even if
precipitation drag reduces those winds somewhat, there will still
be low visibility and dangerous wind chills. Despite sub-warning
level snowfall amounts, opted to issue a Winter Storm Warning for
the eastern Sierra in agreement with our neighboring Reno and
Hanford NWS offices, mainly for the combined impact of strong
winds and periods of moderate snowfall.

Elsewhere, precipitation coverage is expected to be light and
spotty, with chances of precipitation across most of the lower
desert terrain 30 percent or less. The higher terrain may squeeze
out a little more organized shower activity, and some light snow
accumulations remain likely in the Great Basin, Spring Mountains,
and higher terrain of Mohave County, but amounts will generally be
of minimal impact, ranging from a dusting to a few quick inches in
more snow prone locations.

.LONG TERM...Next Week.

A cold and breezy beginning of the week is expected as our very
strong weekend low pushes east across the CONUS. This will leave
a northerly flow regime in its wake and and maintain northerly
surface winds across our region.

After Monday, the forecast is the definition of uncertainty. If you
look at the GEFS/GEPS/EC means, you'd think that there is reasonable
agreement at longwave, broad troughing across much of the western
US. This is in response to a high amplitude high in the eastern
Pacific and anomalous high over Greenland. However, when diving into
the clusters for late next week, the solutions vary from a stout
Canadian closed low dropping south across the west, to the Pacific
ridge shifting east to the western seaboard. About 60% of the GE
membership develops some sort of troughing pattern to a
lesser/greater degree by next Thursday/Friday, about 20% slow this
down into the weekend or the following week, and yet another 16%
push any low well to the east and instead puts the western CONUS
under high amplitude ridging. The most obvious place to see this
uncertainty is in the box/whisker plots for temperature in the
desert valleys like KEED or KLAS where the 10th percentile of high
temperatures overlaps with the 90th percentile for lows. At this
stage, it is hard to say anything with confidence for that long term
period other than the pattern will remain "active".

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Northwest winds will prevail this
morning through 12z before becoming light and variable from 12z
through 17z. Northwest to north winds are expected to redevelop this
afternoon with speeds around 10-12 kts and continue through sunset.
Northwest winds will prevail early evening around 8 kts before
shifting southwest around 7 kts after midnight. SCT-BKN mid and high
level clouds will spread over the area early this morning with
clearing expected early afternoon.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Winds generally less than 10 kts for most area through
mid morning with increasing northwest winds this afternoon. Most
areas will see west to northwest winds 10-20 kts with the strongest
winds across Esmeralda, central Nye, and Lincoln Counties where
gusts to 30 kts are possible.
