Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
116 AM EST Thu Feb 15 2024

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure holds influence over the region tonight into Thursday.
Clipper system passes through Thursday afternoon and Thursday
night. Another low pressure system impacts the region Friday
night into Saturday. High pressure influences the region Sunday
into the middle of next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Adjustments were made to temperatures over the next few hours
as winds have remained a bit elevated around 5-10 mph which has
limited radiational cooling somewhat compared to previous
forecasts. However, as winds are expected to diminish and with
clear skies, cooling rates will likely increase later in the
overnight hours. Lows will be in the teens over the snowpack and
mostly 20s elsewhere.

Sunshine will fade behind increasing clouds Thursday. High pressure
will be overhead during the morning, but as it pulls away, moisture
ahead of the next system arrives. The late afternoon may see a
shower arrive for the far NW area with a chance pops in the fcst.
It'll be milder Thursday with highs climbing to the low/mid 40s
for south NJ and Delmarva while mid/upper 30s are expected for
north NJ and into the southern Poconos and Lehigh Valley. Light
south to southwest winds will increase to around 10-15 mph
during the afternoon with some gusts near 20 mph possible.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The short term period will be the most active where two systems
will bring the potential for some wintry weather across the
region.

By Thursday night, high pressure will be located off the
Southeast US with a clipper system tracking across the Great
Lakes into the interior portions of the Northeast. An associated
cold front will progress east with time and move across our
area early Friday morning. The best chance to see some
precipitation looks to be north and west of the I-95 corridor,
and especially north of I-78, where better forcing is present
and the atmospheric column has a bit more moisture at low-
levels. Temps will be cold enough to support snow along and
north of the I-78 corridor with a mix of rain/snow showers
further south. Overall, snow amounts will be minimal with up to
a half inch of snow possible. The latest suite of CAM guidance
has supported an increase in PoPs with the evening forecast
update, especially north of I-78.

Another thing to keep an eye on will be the breezy to windy
conditions forecast to develop, especially during the overnight
period behind the cold front. A strong pressure gradient will
reside in the wake of the front along with fairly modest
pressure rises. Winds will shift from the southwest to west or
northwest behind the front and increase to 15-25 mph across much
of the area with gusts near 30-40 mph possible. Near the coasts
and across the higher elevations of eastern Pennsylvania and
northern New Jersey, peak gusts of 40-50 mph are possible. A
Wind Advisory may need to be considered for the southern
Poconos. Aside from the shower potential and winds, skies will
remain mostly cloudy with temps in the upper 20s to mid 30s.

Following the frontal passage, high pressure temporary noses in
from the west on Friday. Skies will be mostly clear but winds
will be elevated and quite blustery at times as the pressure
gradient remains tight across the region. Wind gusts up to 30-40
mph are possible early, but will diminish later in the day.
Highs on Friday will be in the upper 30s to mid 40s, but will
feel- like temps are only in the 20s to low 30s due to the brisk
northwest wind.

By late Friday into Friday night, clouds return as the next
area of low pressure begins to approach the area. Low pressure
will track out of the Tennessee Valley along the Virginia/North
Carolina border and off the Mid-Atlantic coast by Saturday
morning. With the storm track situated well to our south, there
will be more cold air available with the high situated to the
north over Canada. This should allow the majority of the
forecast area to experience snow as the more dominant
precipitation type where temps will be below freezing. The
exception will be across southeastern Delaware where
temperatures will be more marginal with east-northeast winds off
the Atlantic. Overall, this system will be quick-moving and all
precipitation should occur over roughly a 6-12 hour period with
the general timeframe being from midnight to noon on Saturday.
In terms of snowfall amounts, the early call is for a widespread
swath of 1-2 inches areawide with lesser amounts across
southeastern Delaware and extreme northern NJ which will be
further displaced from the system.

Following the exit of the low during the day on Saturday, some
partial clearing is expected from south to north with highs in
the mid 30s to low 40s.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The ensembles and deterministic models suggest surface high
pressure will dominate over the eastern CONUS through much of
the long term. Overall, with surface high pressure primarily in
control, expect the long term to be fairly quiet weather wise.

Some of guidance does indicate a few dry fronts and some
shortwave energy may cross through the region during the term. A
more defined dry cold front looks cross through the region some
time Sunday into Monday. However, not noting any precipitation
potential with these features among the models. Hence, the
forecast for the long term today will carry no chance of PoPs
through the duration of the term.

Right around average temperatures for the region look to be on
tap for the term.

&&

.AVIATION /06Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

.Tonight...VFR/SKC, however some cirrus will begin to spread
into the area late. Northwest winds near 5 kts diminishing a bit
and becoming variable in spots after 09Z. High confidence.

.Thursday...VFR expected. Increasing high clouds with some
mid/low clouds arriving after 21Z or so. Light winds becoming
SW to S around 10 kts after 18Z. Some gusts near 20 kts possible
after 21Z. High confidence.

Thursday night...Primarily VFR, but sub-VFR is possible at
KABE/KRDG with some rain/snow showers. Elsewhere should remain
dry, although some isolated showers may develop as far south as
KPHL. S-SW winds around 10-15 kt becoming W-NW around 15-25 kt
between 03-06Z with gusts 25-35 kt possible. LLWS expected with
winds at 2kft increasing to 40-50 kts from the southwest,
shifting northwest by 06Z. Moderate confidence on overall
evolution, lower confidence on details.

Outlook...

Friday...VFR expected. W-NW winds around 15-20 kt with gusts up
to 30 kt possible. Moderate confidence.

Friday night...VFR early, becoming sub-VFR late with light snow
likely. Light and variable winds. Moderate confidence.

Saturday...Sub-VFR likely early, improving later in day. W-NW
winds around 15 kt gusting up to 20-25 kt. Low confidence.

Sunday...VFR. SW winds 15-20 kts with gusts up to 25 kts. High
confidence.

Monday...VFR/SKC. W winds 10-15 kts becoming more SW in the
afternoon/evening. High confidence.

&&

.MARINE...
The Small Craft Advisory for the New Jersey coastal waters
remains in place until 4 AM, as the latest observations and
guidance continue to suggest seas near 5 feet and winds gusting
25-30 kts will persist into the overnight hours before
diminishing. High pressure will approach the waters overnight
and crest over the region Thursday morning. Fair weather through
Thursday. Winds do increase later Thursday afternoon, but it
looks like it will remain sub-SCA through the early evening.

Outlook...

Thursday night through Friday...Gales likely developing late
Thursday night as a strong cold front pushes offshore. Some rain
or snow showers may accompany the frontal passage late in the
evening. SW winds around 20 kt gusting up to 30 kt Thursday
night, becoming W-NW around 20-30 kt gusting up to 40 kt by
around midnight or so. Winds gradually diminish through Friday.
Seas of 4-6 feet, lowering to 2-4 feet. A Gale Warning has been
issued for all Atlantic coastal waters and Delaware Bay from
Thursday evening through Friday morning.

Friday night...No marine headlines expected. N-NE winds
