* At 356 PM EST, a dangerous snow squall was located along a line
extending from near Pecks Pond to near Pond Hill, moving east at 35
mph.
HAZARD...Flash freeze on roads. Intense bursts of heavy snow and
gusty winds leading to blowing snow and rapidly falling
visibility. Wind gusts up to 35 mph.

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will quickly move offshore of the Mid- Atlantic
this morning. High pressure then builds closer to our Sunday
into Monday. A weak cold front may settle into our area Monday
into Tuesday, then high pressure build in on Wednesday. An area
of low pressure may arrive Thursday night or Friday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Quick update...As the snow squalls are making it into the
forecast area, I updated the weather grids to specifically
highlight the snow squall potential added isolated SW+ to the
grids for the Lehigh Valley and Poconos. Based on road surface
temps, while there may be a few brief snow showers that push
further south and east, accumulation is not expected.
Nevertheless, motorists should exercise caution due to the
chance of reduced visibility when traveling at high speed.
Previous discussion...
Recapping the last 12 hours... a strong mesoscale band moved
across PA during the overnight and ended up setting up along a
narrow axis from Berks county PA all the way to the Atlantic
Ocean. Within this band, snowfall rates of 4-5"/hour were seen
with snow accumulations ranging from 8-13". The band was
generally only 10 to 15 miles wide from south to north with snow
totals in the 2-4" range on either side. While these rates are
rare for our area, rates that high are not necessarily uncommon
within strongly forced f-gen mesoscale bands such as lake effect
bands or as was the case in the case from December of 2020
across central PA into NY.
For the rest of the afternoon we are seeing scattered convective
showers moving across PA and NY. Several snow squall warnings
have been issued and webcams are showing brief reductions in
visibility. Per the Keystone Mesonet data, while air temps are
still well below freezing road surfaces have increased to the
mid to upper 30s across Carbon/Monroe counties. Across the
Lehigh Valley and the Philly Metro area air temps are near to
above freezing with road temps closer to 40. So in the heaviest
snow showers there is some potential for brief snow accumulation
in the convective showers however further snow accumulation is
not expected. The Snow Squall parameter does ramp up towards 21z
over Carbon/Monroe counties and surface based instability
increases to 40-80 J/kg which is ample for snow squalls. In
addition there are a number of ribbons of 925mb fgen that would
support the potential for heavy snow showers.
Gusty winds will continue this afternoon up to 25-30 mph and
will remain breezy but lose most of the gust potential heaving
into the overnight hours. With a fresh snow pack, temps should
be on the lower side of guidance with highs ranging from the
upper 20s to near 40 degrees.
With broad scale subsidence, a new snow pack, and clearing
skies, it will likely be a chilly night tonight. The only thing
that may limit radiational cooling is that winds could stay up
near 10 mph through the night. Lows are forecast to range from
the lower teens to lower 20s.
Sunday will become a bit breezy during the afternoon under
southwest flow, although temperatures will begin to rebound a
bit. Temperatures will drop back into the 20s Sunday night
though. Some gradual warming is then forecast through Monday.
High temperatures are currently forecast to be at or a few
degrees below average.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
An upper trough passes through the region Sunday night, then
high pressure builds in from the west on Monday and will
establish itself over the Northeast and eastern Canada Monday
night through Tuesday.
Conditions will be dry through the period. Highs on Monday will
generally be in the lower 40s, and then highs will only be a
few degrees warmer on Tuesday.
At night, with clear skies and light winds, radiational cooling
conditions will develop, so will undercut guidance and go with
a 2:1 blend of the NBM:NBM10. Lows should mainly be in the 20s
Sunday night and then in the teens and lower 20s Monday night.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The base of high pressure over eastern Canada will extend down
into the Mid-Atlantic for the middle portion of the new week.
Towards the end of the week, the high departs and moves
offshore. A developing storm system looks to impact the region
towards the end of the work week.
Conditions will be dry with moderating temperatures through
Wednesday. A warm front will lift through the region Wednesday
night through Thursday morning, but models not really picking up
on precip associated with it. Will follow the NBM and carry
mostly slight chance PoPs Wednesday night through Thursday
morning, though there is a low chance for PoPs in the far
northern areas.
Mid-level trough then moves into the Midwest, and surface low
pressure will develop somewhere over the Great Lakes/Ohio
Valley/Tennessee Valley. This then works its way through the
Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Thursday night through Friday night.
Ptype looks to be mostly rain. There is a lack of cold air at
the surface ahead of this system, and models do not have an area
of high pressure in a favorable location for cold air to move
into the region. Some snow possible in the Poconos, but it may
also be a rain/snow mix. Will see how this system develops over
the upcoming week.
Upper trough then passes through Friday night through Saturday,
and this may have enough cold air for show showers. PoPs for
now are capped at slight chance.
