What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Philadelphia/Mount Holly wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Mar 11, 4:52 PM EDT, 1 hour 38 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Mar 11, 4:52 PM EDT, 1 hour 38 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
452 PM EDT Mon Mar 11 2024

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure over Nova Scotia and high pressure over the
Tennessee Valley early this afternoon will result in strong
westerly winds across the region for the rest of the day. As
the high builds eastward tonight and Tuesday, winds will
gradually diminish. The high will move offshore by Wednesday.
Low pressure will pass north of the area later Thursday. A cold
front will cross the area Friday with another low pressure
passing to the south Friday night. Canadian high pressure builds
in briefly Saturday before another system possibly approaches
Sunday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Satellite pics show no clouds over the entire area early this
afternoon. However surface observations continue to show strong
west-northwesterly winds across the entire region.

Low pressure over Nova Scotia will gradually make its way
across the Canadian Maritimes through this evening. As this
occurs, the strong upper-level trough will also be shifting to
our east and northeast. Meanwhile, surface high pressure over
the Tennessee and Ohio Valleys will build into the Southeastern
states tonight. A tight pressure gradient remains in place
between these two systems, resulting in strong winds continuing
all across our area for the rest of today.

The flow at 850 mb is forecast to be 50-60 knots through early
afternoon. The boundary layer remains well mixed given ongoing
gusty winds and surface heating. The model point forecast
soundings overall show an inversion in place and the stronger
winds are just above the inversion height (except the higher
terrain). This should keep the bulk of the wind gusts today
below high wind warning criteria (50+ knots or 58+ mph),
although a few gusts this high cannot be ruled out in the
highest elevations. The mixing is forecast to decrease early
this evening with winds diminishing quickly this evening.

As we go through tonight, we continue to lose more of the
upper-level trough however the flow aloft still is from the
northwest. Some shortwave energy is forecast to slide on by and
this could carry a bit of high clouds in. Overall though a
mostly clear sky though is forecast. The winds will diminish
quickly this evening as the mixing wanes despite a tight
pressure gradient remaining. Dew points will be on the lower
side but with some recovery with time, and therefore a chilly
night is forecast with low temperatures mostly in the low to mid
30s.

High pressure ridged across the Southeast will keep fair weather
across the area Tuesday. A west to southwesterly flow will
advect warmer air into the region with maximum afternoon
temperatures about 10F higher than Monday.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
High pressure continues over the region through the middle of the
week with warm air advection and a building ridge. Temps will be
well above normal for mid March with upper 60s on Wednesday and
70s on Thursday. Flow will be light aloft and at the surface
should we should have a couple of pleasant days during the
middle of the week.

&&

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Warm conditions continue through Friday as the forecast is in the
low to mid 70s and from there guidance is trending unsettled for the
weekend. A pair of mid level lows will swing around the base of an
upper level low bringing a chance for some showers Friday followed
by cold air advection and another round of showers Sunday. However
at this stage there are timing differences so while the large scale
pattern suggests unsettled weather, it could change speed up or slow
down changing when the precip would actually arrive.

&&

.AVIATION /21Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

This afternoon...VFR. West-northwest winds 20-25 knots with
gusts 35-45 knots.

Tonight...VFR. West-northwest winds diminishing to 10-15
knots with some gusts to around 20 knots early, then 10 knots
or less overnight.

Tuesday...VFR. West-northwest winds 10-20 knots.

Outlook...
No significant weather is expected Wednesday through Friday.

&&

.MARINE...
Will go ahead and extend the Gale Warning until 8 pm, as deep
mixing will result in gusts in the 40-45 knot range. Winds
decrease this evening, and a brief Small Craft Advisory may be
needed following the gales. Conditions should remain below SCA
on Tuesday.

Outlook...

Conditions should remain below SCA Wednesday through Friday.

&&

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Offshore flow has moved the excess waters off the coast, and we
should be coastal flood-free for a couple of days. Thereafter,
the weakening flow may allow water levels to rebuild, with some
threat of minor coastal flooding towards the latter portion of
the week.

&&
