.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure over the midwest early this afternoon will build
across our region through tonight. The high will pass offshore
Friday keeping a cold and dry airmass in place. A coastal system
passing just south of the area will bring widespread
precipitation to the region Saturday through Saturday night. The
coastal system will move to the east of our region Sunday
morning, followed by high pressure and seasonable conditions
later Sunday into Monday. A much stronger system system will
bring rain and strong winds to the region Tuesday through
Wednesday as low pressure passes across the southern Great Lakes
and toward New England.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
High pressure over the midwest builds across the region tonight
and moves offshore on Friday. The positioning of the high will
help to usher in a cold Canadian airmass. Lows tonight will drop
into the mid teens to mid 20s. A NW breeze around 5-10 mph with
a few gusts up to 15 mph will result in wind chill values in
the teens and low 20s tonight for much of the region with single
digits across the Poconos. Temperatures on Friday will peak in
the 30s.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Summary: A coastal winter storm is forecast to affect portions of
the region this weekend, beginning Saturday, peaking Saturday night
before exiting on Sunday. Widespread precipitation is forecast
across the entire area, with wintry precipitation mainly confined to
locales situated northwest of the I-95 corridor. Details follow
below:

Synoptic Overview: A closed mid-level low near Texas on Friday will
open into a shortwave trough and deamplify as it ejects northeast
toward the Great Lakes. It is forecast to cross our region Saturday
night into Sunday while strengthening as the sub-tropical jet will
be centered across the Southeast, placing the northern-most areas of
the forecast area in the left exit region of the jet as it shifts
offshore. At the surface Friday night, high pressure will be
shifting off the Mid-Atlantic coast giving way to a surface low
developing over the northern Gulf Coast which will lift
northeastward toward the Carolinas by Saturday afternoon. The 12Z
guidance suite today, generally keeps the center of the low roughly
50-100 miles to the east of the NJ/DE coastline, paralleling
the shoreline Saturday night. By Sunday morning, the low will
begin to pull away from the area up towards the New England
coast, while deepening into a sub 990mb low as it does so.
However, the heaviest of precipitation will be out of the region
by this time.

Coastal System Forecast and Impacts...

Timing: Precipitation will begin to spread into the region late
Saturday morning into the afternoon from southwest to northeast.
Peak intensity is currently forecast to occur early Saturday evening
into early Sunday morning (roughly 4PM Saturday through 4AM Sunday).
Guidance has trended in the way that precipitation will not be in a
rush to leave during the day Sunday, as wrap around moisture
associated with an inverted trough back into Pennsylvania,
suggests that precip will remain Sunday afternoon. Nonetheless,
the system and all precipitation will exit by Sunday evening.

Snow/Wintry Precipitation: Basis the latest suite of forecast
guidance today, our confidence is increasing that an impactful snow
event across the majority of the forecast area is decreasing. The
exception is across the higher terrain, especially the areas north
and west of the Fall Line where the weather type will remain all or
mostly all snow. With the orientation and track of the surface low,
strong easterly surface flow will be streaming off the relative
'warm' 47-50 degree ocean waters of the Atlantic across the Coastal
Plain through much of Saturday night into Sunday morning. In
addition, guidance today also suggests that the 850mb surface low
will now track further inland than previously indicated. This will
cause the 0 degree C isotherm to track further north potentially
even up into the higher elevated areas as indicated in the 12Z
GFS/NAM guidance. Don't totally buy this solution at this point, but
is certainly possible basis ongoing trends.

As a result, the forecast is for snow at the onset of the system for
almost all interior locations albeit may be brief, with all rain
confined to the Delmarva and coastal locations of central and
southern NJ. Snow will gradually switch over to a mixture of
snow/sleet and eventually to all rain from south to north later
Saturday afternoon and into Saturday night as the mixing line surges
north as temps warm into the overnight hours. Up in the Lehigh
Valley, snow will likely win on out for the first half of the event,
but the warm tongue aloft now appears to make its way up into these
areas. This should cause a period of some mixing with sleet/rain
which will hinder snowfall amounts in these areas. For the Poconos
and extreme N NJ, precip type looks to remain all snow. With this in
mind, our thinking with regard to snowfall forecast is for a trace
of snowfall across a majority of the Coastal Plain and along the
immediate I-95 corridor, including the city of Philadelphia. In
between the I-78 and I-95 corridors, expect up 2 inches of snow.
Once into the Lehigh Valley and across portions of Warren and Morris
County, snow amounts further increase up to 2-5 inches. It is not
until reaching the Fall Line where snowfall amounts increase above
warning level criteria. Thus, a Winter Storm Watch has been issued
for Carbon, Monroe and Northampton counties in PA and Sussex, Warren
and Morris Counties in NJ for Saturday morning into Sunday
afternoon. Confidence has increased in these areas for warning
criteria, especially in the higher terrain areas which will
certainly meet valid watch issuance.

Rain: Along the I-95 corridor and points south and east, the
rainfall forecast has been increased slightly with rainfall amounts
generally ranging between 0.75-1.25 inches. Localized higher amounts
are also possible especially along the coastal areas of New Jersey
where coastal convergence is maximized. Flooding is not much of a
concern this go around, but still cannot rule out some minor
flooding of low lying or poor drainage areas.

Winds: East-northeast winds will increase into Saturday afternoon
and evening to around 15-25 mph inland and to around 25-35 mph near
the immediate coast. Wind gusts up to 40mph are also possible across
the coast of Monmouth/Ocean counties on the north side of the low
pressure system. Winds will shift northeast then north overnight and
diminish on the back side of the low on Sunday morning. No
significant impacts are anticipated due to winds, however the soggy
ground and gusty winds may combine to result in a few downed trees
or isolated power outages near the coast.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
A short period of quiet weather following the system from the
weekend. Dry weather is expected Sunday night and through Monday
night as high pressure builds in. Temperatures will be seasonable
with lows in the upper 20s/low 30s for Delmarva and metro Philly and
mid 20s N/W. Highs will be in the upper 30s/low 40s for the region.

A rather dramatic change in the upper pattern this weekend and next
week will likely lead to headline producing weather early next week.
The focus of this weather will be a strong low pressure system will
launch from the lower Mississippi Valley Tuesday morning and head
towards the Great Lakes into the midweek. The low is expected to
strengthen significantly with the central pressure heading below
980mb. possible. The low looks to cut west of our area with a strong
surge of mild and humid air expected for the region. Strong winds
and heavy rains look increasingly likely for the Tue./Tue. night
periods. Even this far out (in time) models are pegging moderate to
heavy rains for many areas. Hydro impacts, especially across
Northern NJ are probable. We'll have more information on that in the
next few days. Very mild Tue with highs in the 50s and some low 60s
for Delmarva possible. Dry weather returns following the system with
temperatures dropping back to normal levels by the end of next week.

We urge our partners and the public to remain aware of this
potentially impactful storm next week.  Details for this system
should become a bit more clear into this weekend.

The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

kts diminishing to around 5-10 kts. High confidence.

Friday...VFR with mainly clear skies. Northwest winds 5-10 kts.

Outlook...

Friday night...Primarily VFR with increasing clouds. Winds light and
variable. High confidence.

Saturday...VFR early, likely becoming sub-VFR with MVFR/IFR ceilings
in the afternoon as precipitation increases across the area. Best
chance of some snow is at KABE/KRDG with lesser amounts at I-95
terminal locations. Perhaps, KMIV/KACY stay all rain. E-SE winds
increase through the afternoon up to 10-15 kt with gusts as high as
20 kt. Low confidence.

Saturday night...Sub-VFR conditions likely with rain/snow across the
area. Best chance for snow again is at KRDG/KABE, with mostly rain
at the remainder of terminals. NE winds becoming N winds around 15-
20 kt with gusts up to 25 kt possible. Low confidence.

Sunday...Sub-VFR conditions likely to continue as rain/snow showers
persist across area. Precipitation begins to wane in the afternoon.
NW winds around 10-15 kt. Moderate confidence.

The Small Craft Advisory will continue overnight through 4AM
Friday for the Delaware Bay and through 7AM Friday for all
ocean zones due to elevated winds and seas. NW winds will
gradually diminish overnight to 10-15 kt with gusts up to 20 kts
by early Friday morning. Seas will lag behind by a few hours,
but are expected to subside below advisory criteria by daybreak
Friday.

Friday...No marine headlines expected. Northwest to west wind
10 to 15 knots. Seas 2 to 3 feet.

Saturday...Small Craft Advisory conditions likely. E-SE winds around
10-15 kt in the morning, increasing up to 15-20 kt in the afternoon
as low pressure approaches. Gusts up to 30 kt possible. Seas of 3-5
feet.

Saturday night...Small Craft Advisory conditions likely along
Delaware coast and into Delaware Bay with a period of gale force
winds along the NJ coast late Saturday into Sunday. As low pressure
approaches from the south, winds will be enhanced on the north side
of the low. NE-E winds around 20-30 kt with gusts up to 40 kt
possible along the North/Central NJ coast, with winds up to 20-25kt
and gusts up to 30 kt further south. Winds will eventually become W-
NW on the back side of the low. Seas of 4-6 feet building to 8-10
feet by Sunday morning.

Sunday...Small Craft Advisory conditions continue. NW winds around
15-25 kt with gusts up to 30 kt possible. Seas of 7-10 feet,
lowering to 5-8 feet in the afternoon.

.HYDROLOGY...
The potential for heavy precipitation returns this weekend with
a coastal system impacting the region Saturday through early
Sunday. Already saturated grounds from heavy rainfall during
previous storm systems will keep the region more sensitive to
flooding potential. As a result, the WPC has maintained a
Marginal Risk for the Day 3 (Saturday) Excessive Rainfall
Outlook. Current Flash Flood Guidance values remain near 1-3"
for the 3 and 6 hour windows. With total precipitation amounts
near 0.5-1", significant flooding is unlikely with the weekend
coastal system. However, some locally higher rainfall amounts
are possible that may result in some minor flooding of low lying
or poor drainage areas.

Looking ahead, a much stronger storm system has the potential
to bring another round of more widespread heavy rainfall to the
region with potential for flooding beginning Tuesday through
Wednesday of next week. Continue to monitor the latest forecasts
for updates on the Tuesday-Wednesday storm.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Coastal communities should closely monitor the forecast over
the next week as we will have multiple chances for coastal
flooding. The first chance will come with a coastal low that
will move offshore Saturday night, bringing steady onshore
flow. Current indications are that the Atlantic coasts of New
Jersey and Delaware and Delaware Bay will have the greatest
chance of experiencing minor coastal flooding with the Saturday
night/Sunday morning high tide.

A much stronger storm system will impact the region Tuesday
through Wednesday of next week. This will coincide with the
coming New Moon on Thursday, January 11th. This will likely
will result in further coastal flooding, potentially much more
significant and widespread than the weekend system. We will
continue to monitor and make updates as we get closer to each
event.
