What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this frost advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Philadelphia/Mount Holly wrote its last area forecast discussion before this frost advisory went out at Apr 7, 2:04 PM EDT, 17 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Apr 7, 2:04 PM EDT, 17 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
204 PM EDT Sun Apr 7 2024

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure influences the region into Tuesday. A warm
front/weak system could pass through Tuesday night. Another
warm front could lift through Wednesday night/Thursday. A strong
cold front looks to cross through around the time frame of late
Thursday/Thursday night with a secondary cold front possible for
Friday. High pressure then builds in for the weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
Through this afternoon, I left a mention of sprinkles in the
forecast, but the window of opportunity for that to develop is
quickly closing. The altostratus clouds should dissipate and
winds should relax as diurnal mixing wanes in the late
afternoon.

Overnight, a surface ridge slides over our region as a mid and
upper level trough approaches (but stays just west of) our
region. The net result will be winds below 10 kt, and fewer
clouds (though there could remain some high clouds). As a
result, frost is possible across the region. We will be
evaluating the need for a frost advisory in portions of
Delmarva where the average last freeze has already past, and
thus are back into the frost/freeze headline season.

On Monday, a very weak low level trough is expected to lift
northeast towards the region late in the day, which could result
in some increasing clouds. A few models even depict
precipitation in the region, but I am skeptical of that given
the presence of the upper level ridge over our region. As far
as what this might mean during the time of the partial eclipse,
guidance indicates the clouds will be increasing 21Z and beyond
which is just after the period of the partial eclipse (from
roughly 18 to 20Z/2 to 4 PM EDT). Thus, it will be close if the
region will have an obstructed view (as a safety reminder, the
eclipse will be a partial eclipse in our region, and thus only
view it with specialized eye protection - NASA's website has
more details on viewing it safely).

As far as temperatures, southwesterly return flow is expected to
set up, leading to a warming trend beginning, with highs
ranging from the upper 50s to mid 60s.

&&

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Weak surface high pressure holds influence over the region
through Tuesday as it migrates eastward with time. Things look
to become unsettled by Tuesday night with a warm front
approaching, and possibly beginning to lift through, the region.

No precipitation is expected through Tuesday with high pressure
in control; no PoP is included in the forecast for these
periods. PoPs begin to spread over the region from the southwest
Tuesday night. It is worth mentioning that warm frontal timing
is a bit tricky to pin down in this situation (given surface
high pressure offshore migration, frontal development, upper-
level omega block breakdown, etc.). Forecaster confidence is low
in exact warm frontal strength and timing. It is possible
precipitation (i.e., rain) begins a period earlier (i.e., some
time Tuesday) or a period later (i.e., Wednesday) given the
overall pattern.

Return flow pattern sets up for Tuesday. Decent warm air
advection looks to take hold for Tuesday. High temperatures
Monday will mainly be in the low to mid 60s for most areas.
Overnight lows Monday night will be in the 40s across the
region. We could see high temperatures in the 70s across the
region Tuesday due to decent warm air advection.

&&

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Ensembles and deterministic models suggest a strong surface
cyclone will develop to our southwest during the time frame of
Tuesday night to Wednesday night. This low pressure system will
then look to move northeast/north-northeastwards around the time
frame of Wednesday night onwards, eventually impacting the
region. Confidence in exact timing of feature impact (i.e., warm
and cold fronts) is uncertain at this time, but confidence is
high that their impact will occur given the overall synoptic
pattern. Strong warm front will look to lift through perhaps
during the time frame of Wednesday night/Thursday with the cold
front to eventually follow; perhaps crossing through during the
time frame of Thursday night. Secondary cold front could pass
through around the time frame of Friday before surface high
pressure builds in for the weekend.

Overall, there is a growing concern for this system impact later in
the week, especially regarding the anticipated cold fronts to come
through. The primary cold front could be rather potent, bringing
several concerns to the region including severe weather, flooding,
and wind concerns. Will refrain from mentioning much about severe
concerns at this time given the time frame and nothing highlighted
in SPC's outlooks. Flooding wise, in coordination with WPC, the
entire region is now contained in a MARGINAL or SLIGHT risk for
excessive rainfall for Day 5 depending on the area.

Will watch the forecast evolution of this system carefully
during the next updates and through the week.

.AVIATION /18Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Through the rest of today...VFR. Scattered to broken 6 Kft
AGL clouds but not expecting any flight category restrictions.
North/northwest winds around 10 kt with gusts hovering near 20
kt, diminishing late in the afternoon. The exception is at KACY
where a weak sea breeze has developed and winds have already
switched to the southeast. High confidence.

Tonight...Mainly VFR. Mostly clear skies are forecasted and
winds are expected to decouple and become light and variable
overnight. There is a small risk (10%) for shallow ground
fog, primarily in more rural locations and areas prone to valley
fog (including KMIV and KRDG), but chance is too low to include
in the TAFs at this time.

Monday...VFR conditions expected. Winds starting light and
variable, but settling out of the SW at 5 to 10 KT. High
confidence.

Outlook...

Monday night...VFR. SW winds around 5 kts or less becoming more
W with time. High confidence.

Tuesday...VFR. W winds around 5 kts. Moderate confidence.

Tuesday night...Sub-VFR possible with -RA/-SHRA. SE winds 5-10 kts.
Moderate confidence.

Wednesday...Sub-VFR with -RA/-SHRA. SE winds near 10 kts. Moderate
confidence.

Thursday...Sub-VFR with RA/SHRA. S winds 20-25 kts with gusts of
30-35 kts possible. Moderate confidence.

&&

.MARINE...
Expecting fair weather over the waters Sunday and Sunday night.
Winds generally from the north at 10-15 kts with gusts up to 20 kts
at times, becoming light and variable at night. Seas 3-4 ft during
the day become 2-3 at night.

Outlook...

Monday through Wednesday...No marine headlines anticipated.

Wednesday night...SCA flag possible.

Thursday...Gales possible, SCA flag anticipated. Seas could build
up to 7-10 feet.

&&

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
The morning high tide has passed, so our attention now turns to
the high tide later this evening and on Monday. The concern
remains for coastal/tidal flooding along the Altantic
oceanfront, Delaware Bay, and tidal Delaware. This evening will
be the higher astronomical tides of the two tide cycles so the
following high tide on Monday morning probably won't see as much
flooding before more widespread tidal flooding is likely again
with the Monday evening high tide. At this point a Coastal
Flood Advisory continues for this evening's high tide for the
areas described above but will hold off for now on extending it
any further.

We do not expect any tidal flooding for our Chesapeake Bay sites.
