Scattered shower activity continuing through the night with radar
still showing quite a few light-to-moderate intensity showers.
Expecting a lull in overall activity tonight, but increasing again
in coverage by the morning hours. Lightning potential has since
calmed quite a bit as the more intense cells are currently showing
far less ice activity than earlier today. Though still can't rule
out a few strikes during the overnight hours. Retaining the Flood
Warning in Sonoma county for now given the elevated status of several
flood gauges from Mark West Creek down through Petaluma. Otherwise
the forecast for the next storm system this weekend remains on
track.

Current situation: Pretty active afternoon around the Bay Area if
you look at the KMUX radar. Scattered showers and thunderstorms
continue to develop and propagate across the forecast area. The
storms are a result of a broad upper trough overhead, cold
advection aloft, daytime heating with weak surface instability,
and the nearby left exit region of an upper jet. We've had
spotter/public reports of heavy rain and small hail. There is also
an unconfirmed report of a tornado that developed northwest of
Petaluma earlier this afternoon. We're still investigating. The
ongoing river/stream response due to last night's rain and today's
showers continues to cause hydro concerns across Sonoma. A
handful of gages remain near or in flood levels. Therefore, the
Flood Warning remains in effect through late this afternoon.
This evening and Friday: A broad upper trough remains off the
PacNW with moist zonal flow over the Central Coast. A few weak
upper level disturbance pass overhead as well. Therefore,
scattered showers and thunderstorms remains in the forecast.
There may be a little lull in activity this evening/early tonight
before another round of showers develop tonight and Friday. Given
the lower freezing levels small hail will be possible with any
developed cell.

Friday night and Saturday: Zonal flow aloft and additional upper
level disturbance keep convective showers in the forecast.
Saturday night through Monday: Confidence continues to increase as
another impactful storm takes aim at the Central Coast. 20,000
foot view shows threats will include: very strong wind, moderate
to heavy rain, thunderstorms, flooding concerns, and dangerous sea
state. Please pay attention to the forecast over the next 2 days
as the details are fine tuned and hazard products get issued. Now
for the details: Zonal flow aloft becomes highly amplified over
the weekend leading to cyclogenesis over the EPac. The newly
developed low pressure deepens as it tracks toward the Central
Coast Saturday night through Sunday night. The wind field looks
impressive with the deepening low as a low level jet takes aim at
the Central Coast. It looks like a "sting jet" at 925 mb on some
of the model guidance for Sunday afternoon. Current forecast calls
for increasing southerly winds with 60-70kt possible along the
Big Sur coast. Will likely need a mix of wind hazardous for the
weekend: Storm Warning/Gale Warning for coastal waters, High Wind
Warning/Wind Advisory for the land. Winds finally ease by Monday
as the low moves inland. Downed trees and powerline will be
possible. As for precip: the deepening low will tap into higher
PWAT/sub-tropical air and usher it to the Central Coast Saturday
night into Sunday. AR guidance shows some decent IVT and IWT
values over the Santa Lucia Range. These set ups are always tricky
because it's about where the "fire hose" points. While there is
still some uncertainty regarding where the plume points confidence
leans toward Santa Cruz Mts southward. As a result, highest
rainfall totals will be over the Santa Cruz/Santa Lucia Mts with
higher end spots 6-8". Given the recent rains any additional rains
will likely cause hydro problems. River guidance shows a 10%
exceedance chance for flooding. A Flood Watch will likely be
issued heading into the weekend.
Tuesday and Wednesday:
Troughing aloft appears to keep hold on the area. This should keep
periodic shower chances in place.

Primarily VFR conditions with the potential for MVFR ceilings to
develop if a stronger shower moves directly over a station. Within
the last hour, fog has started to develop at KSTS. Given how humid
North Bay is, fog is likely to stick around at KSTS but scattered
overnight showers may disrupt fog development and allow for MVFR
conditions to return. For now, kept fog in the TAF for the next few
hours but will continue to monitor how the fog develops. Light
southerly to southwesterly winds overnight will become more westerly
and moderate during the day with the potential for slightly gustier
conditions (15-18kts) by mid-afternoon. Scattered showers will
linger overnight and into Friday with the potential for brief
decreases in visibility and ceiling heights possible.
Vicinity of SFO...VFR conditions are expected to continue through
the TAF period with light southerly winds transitioning to stronger
westerly winds by late morning/early afternoon tomorrow. Scattered
showers will linger overnight and into tomorrow. Cannot rule out the
possibility that MVFR conditions will temporarily return if a shower
moves over SFO but any decreases are expected to be short lived.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...Radar currently shows a few heavier cells
approaching the Central Coast with the potential for brief decreases
in visibility possible at KMRY and KSNS. Scattered showers will
linger until late tomorrow afternoon when drier conditions will
return temporarily at the end of the TAF period. Light, southerly
winds will prevail overnight before transition to more moderate
westerly to southwesterly winds moving into tomorrow afternoon.

few storms possible throughout the day. Large westerly swell at
