.UPDATE...
Issued at 1010 AM CST Sat Jan 13 2024
Main change to the forecast was to greatly increase PoPs through
the afternoon with the band of light snow we're seeing from west
central down through south central Minnesota. This band of snow
is sitting within the temperature gradient associated with the
arctic airmass that sits across the Dakotas into Nebraska. From
the NAM/HRRR, this band of light snow will continue through the
day, while also expanding east toward St. Cloud and the Twin
Cities. Looking at webcams and road conditions, we did cancel
the winter weather advisory from Waseca up to Eau Claire that
was set to expire at 18z as these areas are no longer seeing
impactful winter weather. For the MN River Valley to the I-90
corridor, we left that Winter Weather Advisory up through 9 pm
tonight. Web cams show a good deal of blowing snow out there
this morning. If we had a decent snow pack in place, we would be
likely talking about blizzard conditions right now, but the
poor quality of the antecedent snow pack has kept us from going
the blizzard route. For the cold and wind chill headlines, all
of that remain on track and no changes have been made to this
point.

.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 321 AM CST Sat Jan 13 2024
GOES water vapor imagery reveals the explosive winter storm
over the Great Lakes region. A potent 982mb low pressure is
centered over SW Michigan with an expansive wind field expanding
over the Upper Midwest. A robust 1046mb Arctic high pressure is
currently over central Canada, will supply the coldest air of
the season into the central CONUS. As the sfc low over Michigan
lifts away into Quebec this afternoon, the column will begin to
dry out and precipitation will taper off. Any additional
accumulation will be light around half inch to an inch at most.
Wind speeds are in the 15 to 20mph range with gusts up to 40mph
across portions of central and western Minnesota. Typically,
this scenario would result in ground blizzards in the typical
locations, but the limited snow pack will dampen the blowing and
drifting snow. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued across
portions of western & southern Minnesota for blowing & drifting
snow. There is still some uncertainty due to the reasons
mentioned above, but blizzard-like conditions cannot be ruled
out due to reductions in visibility & hazardous travel.
The bigger story is the coldest air of the season is on our
doorstep. Temperatures will continue to plummet through the next few
days, with wind chills tumbling below -30F in western Minnesota this
morning, and getting below -35F in those area later today & tonight.
A Wind Chill Warning will go into effect over western Minnesota. The
-25F wind chill threshold will make it to the I-35 corridor and
points east tonight into Sunday. A Wind Chill Advisory will go into
effect in eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin tonight into
Sunday. Temperatures & wind chills will remain quite cold through
early next week before beginning to moderate. This will likely
support an extended period of Wind Chill Advisories or Wind Chill
Warnings.
The rest of the forecast period will be quiet as the storm track is
suppressed to the southern CONUS. Locally, we'll stay in a cold &
dry northwest flow with a light snow chances midweek with a weak
shortwave, but confidence remains low due to limited agreement in
the guidance. Temperatures moderate some by midweek, but look to
remain normal through the period. Looking at Tuesday morning's
forecast for schools, current wind chill forecasts are from
-25 to -30F across much of the area, so we'll likely have at l
east have wind chill advisories for Tuesday morning. We'll
begin trending back toward normal seasonable temperatures with
no significant precipitation events on the horizon.

Issued at 1132 AM CST Sat Jan 13 2024
Mostly prevailing MVFR conditions expected this afternoon with
periods of IFR possible at most MN terminals where ongoing light
snow will reduce visibilities. At MKT, periods of IFR are
possible where blowing snow has been more prevalent leading to
visibilities under 1sm. Light snow will end by this evening,
leading to MVFR overnight as cigs struggle to rise above 3000
feet. Some confidence exists in VFR conditions prevailing after
sunrise Sunday morning with forecast soundings becoming
seemingly too cold to sustain low-level stratus. Strong
northwesterly winds will prevail the entire period. Strongest
winds and gusts expected in western and central MN where
sustained values will be near 20 knots and gusts will be 25-30
knots through tonight.
KMSP...Prevailing MVFR into this evening, with periods of IFR
due to reduced visibilities from light snow. Have added a TEMPO
for this afternoon for 2sm visibilities. Light snow ends this
evening with higher confidence of MVFR cigs continuing through
the period.
/OUTLOOK FOR KMSP/
Sunday...MVFR. Flurries psbl. Wind NW bcmg W at 10-15G25kt.
