Things have worked out well so far with reports of snow in the
3-4-6 inch range Grand Forks to near Cooperstown, Finley and 3
inches in Devils Lake. Final band of heavy snow in the RRV from
Lisbon, Valley City to East Grand Forks to Warroad. This final
area of frontogenic forcing is producing 0.5 to 0.75 inch per
hour rates and acting on better forcing for larger flakes.
NWS observation shows a SLR of 12:1 which would be right in
line with sounding profile showing an average snow ratio for
this event. Messaging a bit harder the southeast edge cutoff for
heavy snow which will be Bemidji-Mahonmen-Fargo area. Snow will
move into these areas and be heavier but not lasting as long as
places more north/west.

Monitoring snow via radar and up through 09z the snow has been
of varying intensity with transient bands of heavy snow.
Frontogentic forcing is strong in east central ND centered early
this AM from Thief River Falls into mid RRV to Jamestown. This
axis moves northeast thru the early morning hours. Thus
frontogenetic forcing is not long lasting at any one spot and
thus seeing varying rates of snow vs one focused band. Soundings
support a deep moist layer with vertical motion more at the
900-850 mb layer and profiles suggest dendrite growth zone is up
to 880 mb then warms to -10C or warmer above that. So overall
thinking is system is not supportive for over achieving snowfall
rates/amounts. Snow ratios using the soundings suggest average
at the current time of the sounding and we have in there 13 to
14:1 but it increases a bit after daybreak as temps continue to
cool.
Watching winds and so far behaving well with peak wind gusts
35-38 kts with max momentum transfer GFK and FAR mostly in the
13z-16z period of 40-44kts. Will need to watch this to see
impacts on vsbys if we get widespread vsbys 1/4 or less in
blowing snow vs getting them just with heavy snow bands. Max
cold advection is present at 09z from GFK to Fargo and southwest
into north central SD and that will push more into the south
valley and out of the main snow area by 12z. So will have to see
if that higher winds aloft (40kt) can mix down despite
lessening cold advection.
Radar at 0915z is indicating heaviest of the snow moving into
the mid RRV and should last a few hours. Have been soliticing
reports form the public on amounts of snow and so far 0.5 to 2
inches.
System moves northeast this morning with snow ending they valley
by noon and in northwest MN this aftn.
Will maintain winter storm warnings and advisories as is as they
line up well. Will monitor for any upgrades to BZW thru the
early morning.
Wednesday, An amplified ridge begins to migrate eastward from the
west coast and an area of high pressure settles in over the Northern
Plains. This area of high pressure should keep us relatively cool
ahead of the ridge as the remnants of cold airmass continues to push
east. Thursday, an upper level low traverses the southern states
across the US giving us an amplified ridge over the Northern Plains.
This amplified ridge will keep us fairly warm over the next few days
as the Southerly flow advects in warmer temperatures. Guidance
starts to diverge over the weekend time period. Model guidance
depicts an upper level low coming onto the Northwest coast Friday
into Saturday. The 00z runs of the global models have come to a
relative consensus compared to the 18z runs. The Canadian, Euro, and
GFS all have the upper level low traversing closer to the Canadian
Border compared to the 18z run which the Canadian had the low
ejecting into the Central Plains on a more southern track compared
to the 00z run where the Canadian depicts the low ejecting into the
Northern Plains near the North Dakota/South Dakota border. Granted
the Canadian still maintains to be the most southern solution. Both
the 18z and 00z runs maintain a strong Warm Air Advection event
ahead of the system. Temperatures and moisture returns are going to
increase to gives us some instability to work with as model guidance
shows the system tapping into the Gulf Moisture. Depending on how
much moisture gets advected and how far North or South the track is
could determine the impacts if any on the Northern Plains early next
week. The ensembles still diverge on the timing of precip and
amounts as the uncertainty with timing and track remains. This may
be the next system to closely monitor.
