.KEY MESSAGES...

- Strong winds will return across the wind prone corridors and
  areas along and west of the Laramie Range in southeast Wyoming
  late tonight into Friday. High Wind Watches have been issued.

- Mountain snow continues, with high-elevation travel likely to
  remain very difficult or impossible for some time. Winter
  Storm Warnings remain in effect for the Snowy and Sierra Madre
  ranges through Saturday AM.

- Extremely cold temperatures and wind chill values are expected
  across much of SE Wyoming and the Nebraska Panhandle this
  weekend. A Wind Chill Watches and Warnings have been issued
  for portions of southeast Wyoming and the entire Nebraska
  Panhandle.

- Widespread light to moderate snow expected Thursday as a cold
  front moves into the northern Nebraska Panhandle and Niobrara
  County in east central Wyoming. Winter Weather Advisories in
  effect 5AM through 5PM Thursday. Another round of light
  snowfall is expected on Friday, with the potential of snow
  squalls along the Interstate 25 and 80 corridor Friday PM.

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...

It's a tricky and complicated short term forecast package to
chat about early this morning for the local weather enthusiasts.
The well-advertised bitter cold temperatures will make their
trek southward toward our cwa via a surface cold front today and
tonight. Local snow showers should bring light snowfall
accumulations to most areas in the lower terrain via an attendant
shortwave disturbance aloft. Looking at the satellite imagery
with the focus on the water vapor spectrum, we can visually see
the baroclinic leaf beginning to develop in a southwest to
northeast transect over the Intermountain West via the warm
conveyor belt. Highest snowfall accumulations will be confined
to the Pine Ridge and Cheyenne Ridge today for locations east of
the Laramie Range. Additionally, with continued impulses of jet
energy embedded within the west-northwest flow aloft, the Snowy
and Sierra Madre Ranges will do very well for additional
accumulations. Went with an extension to the current Winter
Storm Warning through early Saturday morning, which could
ultimately be extended further than that as daily chances of
snow there exists into early next week.

The next 36 hours will be extremely active for weather across
our region. We will have the Arctic temperatures advancing
toward our cwa, quickly tightening surface pressure gradients
resulting in gusty to strong winds, and additional snowfall
accumulation chances. The next shortwave approaches our cwa late
tonight, with 700mb winds increasing quickly between 0z-6z
Friday. Mountain wave activity is advertised ahead of the
approaching snow showers associated with frontogenetic
forcing/isentropic ascent aloft. There will be a narrow window
where winds at 700mb ramp up to 45-60 knots, and this has led to
confidence of a possible high wind event for late tonight into
Friday for areas along the Central Laramie Range and south to
the WY border. The Arctic cold front is expected to become
nestled up against the higher Front Range and Laramie Range
terrain due to its very cold, dense air mass. Eventually it is
modeled to saddle up against the Snowy/Sierra Madre Range for
our cwa concerns. This will cause gusty winds of 45-65+ mph. The
tough part to fine tune is just how far east the subsidence will
stretch off the South Laramie Range and foothills. Went with a
nudge of High Wind Watches into central Laramie County and to
the west across Carbon County as a safeguard. While we have
gusty winds developing on Friday, localized snow squalls will be
possible along the Interstate 80 and Interstate 25 corridor from
the cold front and attendant shortwave disturbance aloft. The
toughest part to convey in the winter and wind headlines is
whether the gusty winds will be due to the tightening surface
pressure gradients, or from localized moderate to heavy snow
bands. The HRRR/RAP/NAM are all pinging the Interstate 25/80
corridor from approximately 18z-0z Friday afternoon for snow
squall activity, as far east as the southern tier of the NE
Panhandle. Have decided to go with Winter Weather Advisories
from early Friday morning into the afternoon hours to reflect
the light snowfall with localized brief moderate to heavy snow
showers that could create a flash/freeze event for portions of
the cwa. Extremely bitter cold air behind the cold FROPA
combined with the breezy to strong winds will cause actual air
temperatures and wind chills to plummet. To be transparent, this
appears to be similar to our flash freeze Arctic air mass event
in December of 2022 where temperatures dropped in Cheyenne by
over 40 degrees in one hour. While there are similarities, the
sharp drop won't be as large this time around, but overnight
lows will tank quickly due to local snowfall also. Temperatures
in the negative teens to negative 20s (below zero) with much
colder wind chills warranted the issuance and expansion of Wind
Chill headlines. Wind chills by Saturday morning will be in the
-25F to -50F range, especially our northern forecast zones and
mountain zones. Please stay tuned for forecast updates as the
bitter cold temperatures make their way toward our region.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...

.ARCTIC OUTBREAK TO BRING EXTREMELY COLD TEMPERATURES AND WIND
CHILLS..

There is high confidence (>80%)for an outbreak of Arctic air to
impact all of the Nebraska Panhandle areas east of the Laramie Range
beginning Friday night and continuing through the weekend and into
next week. Models, MOS guidance and the NBM have continued to drop
temperatures in their respective outputs over the past 24 hours. The
first areas to experience this Arctic air will be across Converse,
Niobrara, and the northern Nebraska Panhandle with the arrival of
the arctic front. Associated with this arctic airmass will be breezy
conditions which will drive those dangerously cold wind chill values
across these areas. The arctic air will continue to move south and
west Saturday and effect all of the Nebraska Panhandle and locations
east of the Laramie Range. Taking a blend of NBM, the previous
forecast and MOS guidance has maximum temperatures on Saturday and
Sunday ranging from zero to -10 across the I-25 corridor, North
Platte River valley, and the Nebraska Panhandle. Couple these
ambient air temperatures with forecast winds between 15-20 mph and
we are expecting wind chill values Saturday and Sunday night to drop
into the -30 to -45F. With confidence increasing the previously
issued Wind Chill Watch has been upgraded to a Wind Chill warning
beginning Friday night through Monday. Additionally the I-80 corridor
from Sidney to the I-80 Summit and parts of I-25 from Cheyenne to
Bordeaux has been put into a Wind Chill Watch.

The main changes made with this forecast package were to adjust
temperatures based on new model and MOS guidance. The rest of the
forecast package regarding the valley and mountain snow chances and
accumulation remains on track from the previous forecast package
(Posted below this section). Storm total snow accumulations for the
Sierra Madre and Snowy mountains look to reach winter storm criteria
with this next round of snowfall, but with active highlights already
out for these areas to cover the current event decided to forgo
issuing any additional highlights but if trends hold, new winter
highlights may be needed once the current highlights expire.

...(Previous Long Term Forecast)

Active weather with bitterly cold temperatures and wind chills
expected this weekend through much of the work week. Several swaths
of jet energy and vorticity maxima will traverse overhead Saturday
through the early portions of next week. Initially, on Saturday, a
broad upper-level trough will be positioned across much of the
northern and north central CONUS. Two strong jet streaks will be
positioned across western Montana/central Wyoming and across eastern
Oregon, southern Idaho, and western Utah. The second jet streak
drifts north and punches into central Wyoming by Saturday evening,
placing the CWA in a favorable location for enhanced synoptic lift.
This lift is coupled with modest 500mb cyclonic vorticity advection
and favorable 700mb and surface winds for upslope development along
the higher terrain. Mountain snow showers look very likely (80 to 90
percent) Saturday as upslope develops and the jet energy pushes into
the region. Even the lower elevations are expected to see some snow
with the evolution of the upper-level flow. Northwesterly flow
remains aloft advecting in relatively moist air and very cold
temperatures. Winds will be elevated Saturday with the highest
elevations and the Arlington wind prone zone at near high wind
criteria. 700mb temperatures will hover between -10C in the
southwestern CWA and -20C in the northeastern CWA, with winds across
the Panhandle approaching 10 to 15kts. Cold 700mb temperatures, cold
surface temperatures, and winds will lead to dangerous wind chill
values across the Nebraska Panhandle on Saturday. A Wind Chill Watch
is in effect for wind chill values between -30 and -40F across the
Panhandle. High temperatures Saturday expected to be in the single
digits and negative single digits east of the Laramie Range and well
into the 20s west of the Laramie Range. The arctic cold across the
Panhandle will delay slightly before finally dropping into southeast
Wyoming on Sunday.

A second swath of jet energy dives down into the western Montana,
central Wyoming, and northern Colorado on Sunday. While weaker than
the jet energy on Saturday, this swath of energy will continue to
enhance synoptic lift across the region with supporting 500mb CVA.
Snow showers continue to be possible to likely (20 to 60 percent)
across the lower elevations. Mountain snow shower persist Sunday
with the additional jet energy, CVA, and favorable winds for upslope
development. 700mb temperatures continue to drop across the CWA with
the entire region expected to see 700mb temperatures between -15 and
-25C. High temperatures Sunday are expected to be in the single
digits to negative single digits area-wide. Unfortunately, winds
will continue to persistent enough to lead to bitterly cold wind
chill values. Wind chill values will drop to -30 to -45 area-wide,
with the "warmest" wind chills west of the Laramie Range. Will
likely need to extend the Wind Chill Watch to include much of the
CWA, but will leave the final decision to the evening and overnight
shifts as there is still ample time between now and these bitterly
cold wind chills.

The last bit of additional jet energy pushes through the region
early Monday morning with northwesterly to westerly winds remaining
aloft. A swath of increased 500mb vorticity will traverse just
northeast of the CWA with only a few, small vorticity maxima
traversing overhead. 700mb temperatures begin to warm into the
single digit negative numbers with less favorable upslope flow
across the Sierra Madres and Snowies. Snow chances drop for Monday
and the remaining long term. Despite the warmer 700mb temperatures,
a snowpack will likely be present on the ground. This will prevent
temperatures from warming significantly. Highs on Monday are
expected to be in the positive single digits to positive teens
across the region, which will be much warmer than the previous day.
Winds chill values will likely remain bitterly cold Monday morning,
but gradually increase through the mid-morning and afternoon hours.
Wind chill values will likely remain in the negative teens until
Monday night when they drop back down towards the -20s. Overall, a
very cold start to the beginning of the week. Finally, an upper-
level ridge begins to develop and move into the western CONUS
Tuesday into Wednesday. Under this ridge, temperatures will begin to
increase towards near-normal.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of panhandle
Nebraska...east central Wyoming and southeast Wyoming.

.DAY ONE TO SEVEN...TODAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY

- Strong winds will persist across the wind prone corridors and
  west of the Laramie Range in southeast Wyoming late tonight into
  Friday. A High Wind Watch is in effect for portions of SE
  Wyoming.

- Mountain snow continues, with high-elevation travel likely to
  remain very difficult or impossible for some time. Blowing snow
  is expected during peak wind times.

- Extremely cold temperatures and wind chill values are expected
  across much of SE Wyoming Friday evening through early next
  week. Wind Chill Warnings and Watches have been issued.

- Widespread light to moderate snow expected today as a cold front
  moves into the northern Nebraska Panhandle and Niobrara County
  in east central Wyoming.

- Snow chances possible everywhere Saturday through Monday with
  the higher terrain likely seeing daily snow showers throughout
  the long term.
