HAZARD...Whiteout conditions with near zero visibility associated
with intense bursts of heavy snow and gusty winds leading
to blowing snow. Wind gusts up to 35 mph.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service State College PA 1101 AM EST Sat Feb 17 2024 .SYNOPSIS... Fast moving locally heavy snow showers and brief squalls are possible through the afternoon. Snow shower activity will fade into tonight. It will remain breezy and with a noticeably chill factor through Sunday. Expect a dry weather pattern to through the middle of next week with temperatures trending above the historical average for mid to late February. && .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 7 PM THIS EVENING/... Breaks of sun are fueling an uptick in coverage and intensity of instability/diurnally driven snow shower activity heading into midday. We issued a blanket SPS earlier this morning to highlight risk potential for fast-moving/transient and cellular snow showers/clusters/squalls moving quickly across the area from NW to SE through the afternoon. So far, webcams have been showing sharp drops in the visibility, but with little to no accumulation on roadways. Road temps are rising above 32F downwind of the mtns, so will need to monitor flash freeze component. Conditions are turning blustery with frequent wind gusts expected to peak in the 30 to 40 mph range making air temps in the mid 20s-30s feel more like teens and 20s. Expect snow showers to fade with the loss of heating into tonight. && .SHORT TERM /7 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/... Lake effect/upslope snow showers eventually shift north to the NW Mtns and near Lakeshore areas tonight and Sunday as the mean llvl flow become more parallel to Lake Erie as llvl trajectory shifts/backs to the WSW by Sunday. It will remain breezy/wind for the entire weekend with frequent gusts in the 25-35 mph range. Sunday looks better than Saturday on the margin with mix of sun/clouds and maxt trending +5-10F vs. Saturday. Winds subside to start the upcoming week as high pressure builds into the area. Temps begin a nice warming trend with highs climbing back to seasonal averages for mid February (mid 30s to low 40s). && .LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... Medium range guidance all points to fair weather and light winds early next week with moderating temperatures, as the upper trough lifts out and surface high pressure builds in from the Grt Lks. The warmup should continue into Wednesday with well above average temperatures, as a weak shortwave and associated surface low track north of the state. A few rain showers appear possible Wed PM (mainly over the NW Mtns) as the trailing cold front pushes into the state. All medium range guidance indicates a deepening upper level trough and associated cold front will approach from the W Grt Lks late next week. Falling heights and surging pwats ahead of the front is most likely to result in a mild and possibly showery Thursday. The latest EPS and GEFS then indicate potential phasing of the upstream trough with a weak southern stream shortwave, resulting in a deepening wave on the front lifting from the Southern Appalachians northeast across the Mid Atlantic Thursday night into Friday. This scenario indicates a potential rain to snow event, especially over the higher terrain of Central PA. Although models appear to be coalescing, there remains plenty uncertainty inherent in a day 6/7 forecast. What appears more certain is that we will see blustery and significantly colder weather arriving by Friday PM as the upper trough swings across the region. && .AVIATION /16Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... Late morning update. Snow has ended in LNS. Winds picking up some now. Added some tempo groups to handle bands of snow showers moving across the region, but so far no real widespread or heavy snow showers. Will continue to monitor update as needed. Earlier discussion below. Already seeing some improvement across the area and expect that to continue over the next couple of hours as snow exits to the east. Lingering MVFR ceilings are expected across the western highlands (BFD/JST) today, with VFR elsewhere. A northwesterly wind will become blustery areawide later this morning. Along with the gusty winds, scattered heavier snow squalls and/or blowing snow will occasionally worsen vsbys. The best chance for scattered showers/squalls will be across the northern airfields (BFD, UNV, and IPT) where a TEMPO group has been added to attempt to target the window where reductions are most likely. As confidence increases that squalls will affect airfields, IFR/LIFR visibilities may need to be introduced into future amendments. Improving conditions are likely areawide by this evening as snow squalls taper off and clear/VFR skies develop nearly areawide. There is a chance MVFR conditions will redevelop at JST and BFD toward daybreak on Sunday, but going with an optimistic forecast at this time. A strong low-level jet will move into western PA early Sunday morning and LLWS conditions may be met. Outlook... Sun...Improving conds and becoming predominantly VFR areawide. Mon-Tue...No sig wx.
