.SYNOPSIS...
A fast moving low pressure system tracking to the north of
Pennsylvania will bring some light snow to portions of the
Alleghenies and northern tier of PA today. Another multi-hazard
winter storm will impact the area Friday into Saturday with
wind, rain, snow, and flooding threats. Lake effect snow and
blustery conditions over the weekend will mark the start of a
colder pattern into mid January with below normal temperatures
and frigid wind chills expected next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM FRIDAY MORNING/...
1 pm update...Expanded snow probabilities farther east across
the northern tier given earlier reports near Westfield in Tioga
County. Also lowered dewpoints to line up more with near term
trends accounting to downslope winds and associated mixing.

930 am update...Late this morning, satellite imagery showed a
compact, but fairly vigorous short wave crossing Lower MI. The
southern terminus of deeper moisture and forced lift with this
system is expected to cross northern PA through this afternoon,
generally staying north of I-80. As a result, our going forecast
of a coating to an inch of snow for the northern tier seems on
track, with little if anything farther south.

Breaks of sunshine late this morning were certainly more evident
over southern portions of the Commonwealth. We expect that to
remain the case throughout the daylight hours. This will also
help lead to a north-south temperature gradient this afternoon,
with high temperatures ranging from the low-mid 30s over the
northern mountains, to the mid 40s in the Lower Susquehanna
Valley.

Early morning discussion...Weak wave of low pressure streaking
eastward across the southern Great Lakes/Ontario should deliver
some light snow to the NW Alleghenies today. Limited moisture
and speed of movement will limit snow accums to less than 1 inch
along the US-6 corridor. Farther to the south, look for partly
to mostly cloudy conditions with highs in the upper 30s to upper
40s (+5-10F above early/mid January climo).

High pressure briefly migrates over the area tonight before
retreating to the northeast into Friday morning. Low temps (mid
20s to around 30F) over the western mtns may occur shortly
after midnight and begin to tick higher as southeast flow ramps
up by 12Z Fri.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM FRIDAY MORNING THROUGH SATURDAY/...
A major cyclone will track north from the Ozarks through lower
MI during the short term period. To the east of the deep low,
increasingly strong southeast flow will drive WAA precip across
the area during the afternoon and evening. Temperature profiles
are marginal over the Alleghenies, but should support a period
of wet snow/sleet focused over the north-central mtns where
lingering cold air may foster several inches of accumulation
and result in a difficult evening commute in some areas. The
majority of the guidance shows max QPF in the 00-06Z Saturday
timeframe, but would not be surprised to see this occur a little
earlier given the magnitude of warm advection. Onset timing and
rates will also be a factor in terms of winter wx impacts. QPF
amounts are in the 0.50 inch to locally 1+ which is most likely
in the higher terrain areas open to the southeast where upslope
lift will be maximized. Giving the preceding soil saturation and
elevated streamflows (hydro sensitivities), there will be a
renewed flooding risk particularly over the Juniata and lower
Susquehanna River basins. The bulk of QPF comes in a ~12hr shot
tapering off/ending after midnight Saturday. Conditions will be
noticeably colder to start the weekend with strong N/NW winds
directing snow showers downwind of Lake Erie and over the
western/northern Alleghenies. Another downslope high wind signal
should emerge with the greatest risk of wind gusts 55-60 mph in
the lee of the Laurel Highlands over Blair/Bedford Counties
(similar to yesterday).

Overall, another multi-hazard winter storm event unfolding this
period with wind, rain, snow, and flooding risks to communicate
and manage.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
*Coldest air so far this winter poised to invade Sunday and
 persist through the middle of next week.*

Lingering lake-effect snow showers across northern and western
PA will gradually dissipate on Sunday, as a weak area of high
pressure builds in. Sunday will be a chilly day, however, with
high temperatures running 5 to 15 degrees below average for mid
January.

Long-range models continue to produce a synoptic snowfall
across central PA next week, but the timing has trended a bit
later. Low pressure is progged to develop off the southeast
coast of the United States and track north- northeastward. The
current timing is Tuesday into Wednesday (about 24 hours later
than previous guidance). The ECMWF continues to be more
aggressive with the deepening of this low and tracks it closer
to the coast than the GFS.

The extended range models are in good agreement that it will
remain cold through the middle of next week, with a reinforcing
shot of cold air arriving on Tuesday night behind the departing
low. Temperature departures will be in the -5 to -15F range
compared to normal corresponding to low temperatures in the
single digits to teens and high temperatures in the teens to low
30s.

.AVIATION /20Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
A deck of stratocumulus cleared out of southern PA this
morning, leaving partly to mostly sunny skies across the south
by midday. Farther north, an MVFR deck of clouds persists over
northern PA.

Clouds will thicken again this aftn across the south, as low
pressure crosses the Great Lakes. JST should again drop to
solidly MVFR cigs this aftn, with borderline MVFR/VFR developing
over the central mtns (AOO, UNV) and the Lwr Susq Valley (MDT,
LNS) remaining VFR.

Additionally, a period of light snow will impact the north
(BFD) from through this aftn accompanied by vsby reductions.

A 35-40 kt W/SW low-level jet around 2000 ft above the sfc will
pass over the region today. However, we're expecting the sfc
breeze to increase as well (gusting 15-20 kt across the higher
terrain), so left mention of LLWS out of the TAFs.

Lingering light snow taper to snow showers across the north
this evening. Reduced cigs (borderline IFR/MVFR) are expected
to persist tonight over the western highlands (BFD, JST). Conds
will improve areawide Friday morning, before the next system
pushes rain/snow and reductions back into central PA Friday
evening.

Outlook...

Fri...VFR conditions early, then rain and snow and reductions
developing from SW to NE late. Gusty winds and LLWS possible.

Sat-Sun...Windy with snow showers N/W and improving conds
across the SE.

Mon...Snow developing from south to north late.

Mon night-Tues...Periods of snow.

.HYDROLOGY...
3 river flood warnings remain in effect for the lower
Susquehanna River Basin tributaries: Hershey, Hogestown and
Middletown. Hershey and Hogestown have crested and will fall
below minor flood stage later this morning.

Several mainstem Susquehanna River points are fcst to crest
near or above action stage today and remain elevated/near
bankfull into the weekend.

Another round of heavy rainfall will bring renewed flooding
concerns to the lower Susquehanna tribs Friday night into
Saturday.

all climate sites to break daily precipitation records for
