.SYNOPSIS...

High pressure brings dry weather with above normal temperatures
today into Monday, with highs 45-50. An impactful Winter Storm
late Monday night into Tuesday. Still some uncertainty on the
exact track and intensity, which will determine precipitation
types and amounts. Coastal flooding a concern along the eastern
MA coast given the high astro tides and strong to damaging wind
potential. Blustery and cold in wake of the system.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...

Highlights...

* Dry tonight with overnight lows in the 20s to near 30
* Partly sunny Monday with highs 45 to 50

Quiet weather continues tonight and Monday with a weak ridge of
high pressure in control. An abundance of mid-high cloudiness
should dissipate at least a bit tonight. This coupled with
light/calm winds...we should see overnight low temps bottom out
in the 20s to near 30. The Urban Heat Island of Boston should only
drops into the lower to middle 30s.

Partial sunshine is on tap for Monday with increasing mid-high
level cloudiness especially during the second half of the day.
This will be in advance of our Winter Storm. Highs should remain
above normal and top out in the 45 to 50 degree range...but
light winds will make for a rather comfortable day of this time
of year.

Sunday night...

Confluent flow aloft provides dry weather. Weak high pressure
beneath the confluent flow provides light winds over the area, along
with partly cloudy to mostly clear conditions, modest radiational
cooling conditions develop. Thus, derived lows from the colder MOS
guidance, yielding mins in the 20s regionwide, except low to mid 30s
along the coast, including Boston.

Monday...

Confluent flow/high pressure lingers across SNE much of the day,
thus dry weather prevails. Models suggest enough subsidence to
provide partly to mostly sunny conditions. This combined with highs
in the upper 40s and lower 50s, along with light and variable winds
will provide very tranquil conditions for mid Feb. Cooler along the
coast with afternoon seabreezes likely.

Highlights

* Coastal storm to impact southern New England late Mon Night
  through Tue bringing significant snowfall to much of the region.

Monday Night through Tuesday...

The main focus of the extended. A slightly negatively tilted trough
will be located over the Mid Mississippi River and TN Valley
Mon evening. The trough deepens as it digs into the Mid Atlantic
by early Tue and into the Gulf of ME/Nova Scotia by late Tue.
In response to the trough low pressure lifts across the TN/OH
Valley Mon Night into early Tue. A secondary low develops over
VA/the Mid Atlantic early on Tue. The secondary low rapidly
deepens as it lifts northeastward just to the S/SE of our region
on Tue and toward Nova Scotia by late on Tue.

Overall the previous shifts forecast looked pretty good with the
latest guidance coming in. Main change in the latest update was
bumping up QPF and snowfall totals. Due to this have also expanded
the Winter Storm Watch another tier to the northwest and southeast.
Finally, opted to hoist a High Wind Watch across Cape Cod, Marthas
Vineyard and Nantucket. Will cover more details below.

Synoptic details...

Guidance really coming into really good agreement on the timing and
intensity of this upcoming system with a rapidly deepening 980 hPa
low or lower sliding through. We've still got some uncertainty on
the exact track with GEFS/EPS along with their deterministic
counterparts sliding near or just to the NW of the benchmark and
stronger solutions. The GEPS along with the GEM/NAM/UKMET guidance
track further to the southeast of the benchmark and just a bit
weaker. The other question is the marginal temperatures that we will
be dealing with, which would create ptype issues essentially
along/SE of the I-95 corridor.

QPF/Snowfall details...

Given the differences described in the synoptic section. If
near/just NW of the benchmark verifies we have more QPF/accumulating
snow across the much of the interior into northern portions of the I-
95 corridor. The solution further to the SE would highlight more
impact wise across the south coast and lower snowfall totals across
the interior. This can be seen pretty clearly via the total QPF AOA
1 inch. The GEFS/EPS are much more amped up with moderate to high
probs (40-80+ percent) through the system across southern New
England. This makes sense as we get a more amped up system with a 30-
50+ kt NE to N jet sliding through as the system deepens. The
weaker/SE solutions keep that jet mostly offshore, which keeps our
QPF total AOA 1 inch in the low to mod range (10-50 percent) from
roughly the MA turnpike to the south coast per the GEPS. This also
shows up quite well in the probs of snowfall amounts AOA 6 inches
where they are mod to high per the GEFS/EPS guidance across much of
the interior. The GEPS is more muted and shifted toward the south
coast, but has been trending further to the N/NW as time has gone
on. Leaned more toward the consistent GEFS/EPS guidance at this
time, which supports bumping up QPF and snowfall amounts. As
mentioned there may be some issues for portions of the I-95 corridor
into SE MA with marginal temps. May have a situation where it is
snowing, but we eat away at the accumulation a bit on the front end
of the system.

Winds...

Given have leaned toward the EPS/GEFS guidance did make some
adjustments to the NBM wind speeds. Does appear we should have
fairly good mixing per GFS Bufkit soundings across SE MA with a
couple hours of 40-50+ kts potentially mixing down. Best shot
appears across the Cape, Marthas Vineyard and Nantucket as the low
is rapidly deepening. There is also a pretty good pressure rise/fall
couplet as well, signally the potential for strong to perhaps
damaging winds. As a result have hoisted a High Wind Watch. This
will couple with the high astro tides and result in some coastal
flooding issues. See the section below for more detailed information
on this risk.

Impacts...

The peak of the storm is anticipated Tue AM and perhaps into the
afternoon for some eastern areas with the comma head. This will
result in a tricky commute for both the AM and PM. Does appear that
there could be a timeframe for 1-3 inch per hour snowfall rates
possible with strong lift within the DGZ. Power outages also a
potential concern given the marginal temps resulting in heavy wet
snow that could weigh on tree limbs and powerlines. This coupled
with the gusty winds could result in issues for some spots.

Tuesday Night through Friday...

Blustery and colder mid to late in the week. Once again didn't put a
whole lot of emphasis on this period given the focus on the previous
period. Should be mostly dry and quiet Wed into Thu, but blustery
with a tight pressure gradient in place. Appears that we turn more
unsettled late in the week and heading into the weekend, but details
are hazy at this point as there some disagreement amongst guidance.
Temperatures will be near to below normal. Could see potential
freezing spray issues across the waters on Wed and/or Thu.

Forecast Confidence Levels:

18z TAF Update...

Monday night and Tuesday...High Confidence.

VFR conditions should prevail Monday evening. Precipitation
will likely overspread the region from southwest to northeast in
the 05z to 11z time frame with conditions deteriorating to
MVFR-IFR levels. Initially, might be mild enough rain or
rain/snow mix along and southeast of I-95. However...most places
along and especially northwest of I-95 flip to snow quickly.
The snow will fall heavily at times during the day Tuesday
resulting in IFR-LIFR conditions dominating. Snow may
accumulating at 1 to 2" per hour at times. Southeast of I-95 and
areas near the south coast, Cape and Islands will have more
Ptype issues. Rain or rain/snow mixed will eventually change to
all snow during the day Tuesday...but specific timing remains
uncertain.

In addition...NE winds quickly ramp up during the day Tuesday.
Gusts of 25 to 30 knots northwest of the I-95 corridor...30 to
40 knots in the Boston to Providence corridor and 40 to 55 knots
towards the Cape and Islands.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...

3:45 AM update...

* Coastal Flood Watch Tue PM for Eastern MA, Cape & Islands
* Very Minor Coastal Flooding Sunday mid-day high tide

Residual surge of 1.0 to 1.5 feet is expected again on today along
the eastern MA coast. This will combined with a 11.6 ft MLLW high
tide at Boston. Any inundation will again be very minor and confined
to the most vulnerable low lying shoreline roads/parking lots. We
issued another coastal flood statement to handle this risk.

Regarding the potential coastal storm early next week, we are most
concerned with the Tue afternoon high tide along the eastern MA
coast. A storm surge of 2 to 3 ft combined with high astronomical
tides and building seas will likely bring widespread minor flooding
for the eastern MA coastline from the NH/MA border south to Cape Cod
and the Islands. Given recent trends of a strong coastal low, storm
surge of 2-3 ft, very strong pressure falls, building seas from
rapidly strengthening low and erosion from past storms, we have at
least 50% confidence in areas of moderate coastal flooding with the
Tue afternoon high tide. Therefore, have hoisted a coastal flood
watch for the entire coastline from NH/MA south to Nantucket and
Marthas Vineyard. Confidence is highest from Boston southward, as
this is where the probabilities are highest for the strongest winds
and accompanying storm surge. Moderate erosion is also possible in
this region.

As with all coastal storms the uncertainty revolves around the
timing of strongest winds and storm surge coinciding with high tide.
Also, still some uncertainty on the exact track of this storm as
well. We are not expecting much impact along the south coast as an
offshore low track will lead to N-NE winds which will limit storm
surge here.
