.SYNOPSIS...
A southerly flow pattern over Alaska will persist into early next
week. This will keep the Eastern Interior and Eastern North Slope
much warmer than normal and dry into Mon. The Western Interior
will remain warmer than normal with periods of rain, snow, and
possibly freezing rain. The West Coast and Western North Slope
will be slightly warmer than normal today. Snow and blizzard
conditions will develop over the Yukon Delta and SW Interior this
afternoon, then spread north to Point Hope and the Western North
Slope on Sun, and then continue into Mon. Areas south of the
Seward Pen will change over to rain on Sun, and could see freezing
rain tonight and early Sun.
Warmer than normal temperatures will continue through the middle
of next week, with the West Coast remaining wet and the Eastern
Interior remaining dry.
Aloft...
The long wave pattern consists of a strong ridge over the Eastern
Pacific north over NW Canada and Eastern Alaska and a deep long
wave trough over the Bering Sea. This long wave pattern will
persist for the next week. This is causing a southerly flow
pattern over Alaska that is causing weak to moderate chinook
conditions over the Southeast Interior, and pushing warm air north
across most of Northern Alaska. A series of short wave troughs
moving north over Alaska will bring periods of moderate to heavy
snow north over the West Coast and Western Interior tonight
through Mon.
Surface...
A 999 mb low 120 NM north of Utqiagvik will move north today. An
Arctic cold front stretching from Utqiagvik to the Bering Strait
will move to Barter Island to the Yukon Delta by 4pm Sat and to
Inuvik to the Yukon Delta by 4am Sun, then weaken as it is over
run by the warm front. This is bringing snow showers, west winds
and cooler air to NW AK this morning, then will spread to NE AK
this afternoon.
A strong low south of Cold Bay will move to the southeast Bering
Sea by 4pm Sat and then persist there into Sun. An occluded
front/warm front extending northeast from this low will move to
Bethel to Denali by 4pm Sat, to the YK Delta to Circle by 4am Sun,
to Nunivak Island to Kotzebue to Arctic Village by 4pm Sun, and
to the YK Delta to Noatak to a 997 mb low developing near Barter
Island by 4am Mon. Snow will spread north with the warm front over
the West Coast and Western Interior and Western North Slope, but
chinook conditions will keep areas NE of McGrath and Bettles
mainly dry. Snow will change to mixed freezing rain and snow along
the occluded/warm front, and to mainly rain south of the front.
Can expect 4 inches of snow over SW Alaska, and 4-8 inches over
the Seward Pen and St Lawrence Is, and 4 inches over NW AK.
High pressure over the Yukon of Canada and the Copper River Basin
will persist into Sun. This is causing southerly gap winds
gusting to 40 mph through AK Range Passes, and will cause
easterly drainage winds near Eagle and Delta to develop today and
continue into Sun as the warm front moves north over the area.
High pressure over NW Russia will build east over the Chukchi Sea
tonight and Sun. This will cause NE winds of 20-40 mph over much
of the West Coast to develop tonight with gusts to 60 mph from St
Lawrence Is to the Bering Strait to Point Hope on Sun. This will
cause the previously mentioned blizzard conditions. This could
spread near blizzard conditions to the Western North Slope from
Utqiagvik west on Sun PM and that will need to be watched.

.DISCUSSION...
At 00Z, models all initialized 30 meters too low on 500 mb heights
at Fairbanks and thus were much too weak with the strong ridge
over the Eastern Interior. Models show similar solutions aloft
through Mon. Expect the ridge to remain stronger than models
indicate through this evening. Will use a blend of models for
features aloft but will have slightly stronger winds aloft over
the Eastern Interior where the ridge is stronger through this
evening.
With precipitation, ,models show similar solutions today, then
the GFS is slower than other models moving precip north along the
West Coast tonight, then comes back into agreement on Sun. Will
use a blend of the GFS/ NAM and ECMWF for precip today, a blend of
the NAM and ECMWF for tonight, and then a blend of the NAM. GFS
and ECMWF for Sun into Mon.
At the surface, models all verify well at 06z on most features
except that the low south of Cold Bay is 2-3 mb deeper than models
indicate. Will use the NAM for surface features and winds since it
keeps the Cold Bay low deeper than other models as it moves north
today and Sun. Will bump up winds in AK Range today into Sun to
account for the stronger ridge aloft.
