.SYNOPSIS...An exiting high pressure system will give way to a
strong frontal system pushing across the area Thursday. This will
bring lowland rain and heavy mountain snow. An active pattern will
remain over Western Washington for the remainder of the week
bringing colder temperatures and a chance for wintery precipitation
each overnight and early morning period.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...Satellite imagery shows
showers over the Southwest Interior moving east northeast into
southern King county at 04z/9 pm. There was some lightning with
the showers when they were north of the Portland area earlier but
there has not been any strikes in the last hour. Doppler radar
also shows some lighter showers in the Strait of Juan de Fuca
moving north. Temperatures were in the mid 40s to mid 50s.
Shower activity continuing to move off to the north and east and
weaken overnight. Satellite imagery has trough behind approaching
frontal system becoming more negatively tilted with time. This
will slow the eastward movement of the approaching front and
could give the interior a short dry spell Thursday morning before
the rain increases in the afternoon. Front into the Cascades
Thursday evening. Snow levels near 2500 feet Thursday lowering to
near 1500 feet Thursday evening.
Weak upper level trough over the area Thursday night through
Saturday keeping showers in the forecast. Snow levels continuing
to lower, around 1000 feet Friday and down to around 500 feet or
less by early Saturday morning. Limited moisture available by
this point so any late night/early morning shower activity likely
to be just a rain/snow mix with no significant accumulations in
the lowlands.
Highs Thursday through Saturday will have a hard time getting much
warmer than the lower 50s with mid and upper 40s common. Current
forecast has the trends covered. No update tonight. Felton
.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...Previous discussion
follows. Deterministic models show the weakest of upper level
ridges attempting to nudge into the Pac NW Sunday which would
serve to lower PoPs further, however the feature fails to scour
out moisture entirely. Ensembles actually seem to go a little bit
further on this allowing for a relatively dry forecast around the
Sound. However, by this point there is the prospect of another
system making its way to the coast by then. The forecast gets
murky here though as deterministic models paint a similar picture
with differing details. Both show a deepening low over the Pacific
pushing a front northward into the area, however the two models
are separated by nearly 24 hours on when it will happen, the ECMWF
preferring Monday while the GFS leans toward Tuesday. Ensembles
show some members picking up on this confusion, showing bumps for
both days, yet the ensemble mean nearly flatlines. This lack of
confidence is reflected in the forecast, with PoPs present, but
mainly in the slight chance to low-end chance categories...ultimately
leaning toward a mostly dry forecast. Would not place any bets on
any particular outcome until a consensus starts to emerge in
later runs. 18

.AVIATION...Weak high pressure has pushed east with a weak
disturbance passing through the region. Southerly surface winds
increase overnight ahead of an approaching frontal system. This
likely brings lowering ceilings to the coast this evening and into
the interior overnight. Gusty southerly winds continue, with a shift
to west/southwest winds behind the front. Showers and possibly a few
isolated thunderstorms could develop during the day Thursday.
KSEA...VFR conditions this evening at the terminal but look to
become MVFR later overnight as low clouds filter in. South-southwest
winds are also expected to increase between 8 to 12 kt into early

.MARINE...A passing through will lead to a stronger onshore push of
winds to 25 kt down the Strait of Juan de Fuca this evening and
overnight. Meanwhile, expect southerly winds to increase over the
coastal waters tonight after midnight ahead of the next front. Small
craft advisories have been issued for each of these areas.
Later Thursday morning with bring increasing southeast winds across
the interior waters, followed by a much stronger round of onshore
flow behind the front. Expect to need new or extended advisories for
many of the zones into at least late Thursday or early Friday.
Additionally, seas will sharply build with the arrival of a large
west swell that will bring seas to the 14 to 17 ft range over the
coastal waters. As such, the advisory for the coastal waters likely
will continue into the weekend as seas will only gradually subside
late this week. Flow looks to turn offshore early next week as a low
further offshore sinks southward from the Gulf of Alaska.
